too sad the code doesn't allow a "boys get them" from the commander to his BBs...

I think it was a wet dream of any WW2 battleship captain to see an enemy carrier in 20 000 yards. "Oh, we are obsolete, are we? This is the age of naval aviation? Lets see how you like THEM apples. Fire the main battery."

Yep. Except that Yamato needed better TF commander ..

.. any kamikaze pilot would do

"damn the torpedoes.. full steam ahead "

Really this idea should have been practiced right from the start

Kido butai at midway should have had the 4xKongo BB in a screen in front of the carriers about 100 miles in front,
with come CA, and CS for search ..sort of like at santa cruz

scout plane "Enemy BB sighted, coming south "
USN TF commander "launch everything! attack any ships you can find!"

ah yes... santa cruz

Actually you can.

Split the Tf into CV TF and SAG, assign an aggressive commander to the SAG and let it follow the carriers.
Not exactly the same but can lead to a "boys get them" like result.

Akagi and Kaga have 8" guns (same with Saratoga and Lexington I believe). It would be interesting to see them in action and actually hit something. A CV hitting another CV must be something like the AE equivalent of the mythical pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

I had something like this happen when I was playing the Allies on the May, 1942, scenario. The Jap player sent the Zuikaku, Shohkaku, Hiryu and Akagi to raid the east coast of Australia. I went after them. We met one night outside Brisbane (sounds like a romance novel title) and one of my destroyers got one hit on Zuikaku before both sides evaded contact.

It might be safer to have the carriers follow the surface task force

I would have wanted Halsey as TF commander in this engagement...

Actually, HMS Glorious was sunk by gunfire from the German Battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. This was not a night combat action, the battle started around 4 in the afternoon. So not only was it quite possible, there is at least that one documented case where a carrier was sunk by obsolete BB/BC gunfire.

One must keep in mind however that a series of errors led to the final outcome. The fact that a carrier traveled with only 2 DDs for escort among them.

Based on that combat report the Japanese didn't spot the Allies and neither TF reached visible sighting range. Of course all the ships were still identified

I've seen them listed as either, depends on which source you are looking at. What you call them is irrelevant when you are on the receiving end of those big guns, right?

anything besides bismarck and tirpitz are light battlecruisers (or just regular cruisers with small battlecruiser guns on them)
