Next Category:

Most Beautiful Old Girls Tarted Up For War

To be eligible for this category you must be an old WWI vintage BB that was essentially re-built during the inter-war years. We have just one group of three - the ship finishing bottom is eliminated and the top two go into the final.

Here we go -

Did you forget something?

Just to give an indication of how their appearance changed here we have Kongo as a hideous, three stacked battlecruiser and as a good looking fast battleship:

Yeah kinda figured that. Just remember to use them one at a time so the contest at least looks fair.

While it's true that Warspite made some significant improvements whilest getting 'tarted up' (particularly the island), I still think she's a bit thicker and stouter and less 'beautiful' as a result. Her straight drop keel doesn't have the swept gracefulness of the Kongos.

While I'm not a huge fan of the Pagoda-style island, I think she (Kongo) still has the edge on Warspite on looks.

ETA: To be clear, Kongo gets my vote in this contest.

ETA II: Why, oh why did they keep the side-mounted guns on Warspite? What an unnecessary waste of weight, steel and personnel to man.

I am not sure of the reason - maybe she was the first "experiment" and Valiant and Queen Elizabeth benefitted from the lessons learned.. I don't know. Whatever the reason, the keeping of the casemated 6-inchers is one of the things I love about her. The First World War hull and the modern superstructure are an intoxicating mix

Personally, my favorite of this category would be the USS Tennessee... but from the trio I choose Giulio Cesare.
