In our second semi-final we have:

HMS Hood … obviously.

Not to be a nitpicker. But a ship that can swap between 3 x 3 turrets and 4 x 2 is pretty damn cool

Scharnhorst is indeed so cool that she can easily be camouflaged to look like Bismarck.

Thank you for noticing that I had uploaded the wrong picture.

I think this was one of Germanys most secret weapons of WWII. Being able to swap turrets within 24hrs or if the need arose during the night using all the available crew. The original plan was devious. It was hoped the allies would think they had a larger enemy fleet opposing them, thus forcing the allied fleets to stay in port rather than facing a stronger foe. It was also meant to decive allied float plane pilots into giving different radio reports on enemy ships sighted, thus creating a chaos in the Admirality.

The major flaw to this weapon was the enormous storage space needed for such guns and turrets. In the end the decission was made to sent the ships to sea with a traditional set of guns and turrets. A genial plan was scraped because German ships were just too small for the extra weapons.

My vote goes to the Hood and Alaska.

Swapping turrets was Raeder's brilliant idea. But Hitler insisted that the ships also be able to launch V-2 missiles, and Werner Von Braun got seasick on the trials.

Had to laugh at the above comment.

Orm you might be right, the coast of Western Europe was a massive storage area for the German Fleet.

well during a storm etc it wouldn't have mattered whether it had carried 3 or 4 turrets - as I believe A turret was always under water... a truly ingenious design..... (I hope I remember it correctly - might also have been the aft turret - so I stand corrected if so...)

Getting back to Battleships, there was a very good Aussie series (I think) on them that is on these DVDs. Check out the ratings...

And so the voting comes to an end in the Fast Battleship competition. The Grand Final will be between the Axis leviathans - Bismarck vs Yamato.

But that's for later. Meantime we still have the battlecruiser contest open and we begin the next contest:

Most beautiful Inter-war Heavy Cruiser. Two groups of three again for this one - please vote once in each group.

Here comes the draw....
