When I was young, in the 50's, the German population in South St. Louis was known as the "scrubbin' Dutch" (Deutch) with some pride because of their habits of maintaining their properties in imacculate order...

I have:

- punctual
- Lederhosen
- Beer
First four stereotypes that I can rattle off:
-Superb engineers, manufacturers
-Stubborn
-Hard working
-Humorless
Of course, I know a number of Germans and they are all exceptional individuals that are counter to the above. Except for the stubborn and humorless bits. [:'(][;)]

RE: OT: Stereotypes about Germans in the US
We had a conference a few years ago, and as we were doing the closing After Action Reviews, most speakers got up and read off a few comments about the conference. But one of our Colonels (of German heritage) had two large posterboards with notes covering specific topics. He introduced himself and said "I know this may seem more formal than some of the other presentations, but as many of you know, my family is originally German, and of course we are known for certain things, like discipline, organization, oh and world conquest!" The crowd burst out laughing, but a succinct summary of your stereotypes. Since I am German heritage myself, I have always remembered that!

Germans are known for their love of the land.
Particularly the land of their neighbors.

If you're asking about "stereotypes in the negative" (given to mean a mostly false impressions) I would say your #1 point is fairly accurate. It's hard to underestimate the lingering power of war time propaganda (from two world wars).... most unfortunate.
I would also add that it's also hard to underestimate the ignorance of today's generation of Americans (through no fault of their own... we have become a 30 second sound bite society - depth and understanding are not asked for, nor encouraged).
Cheers,
B

Don't know what Iced Tea is.
Worked with some visiting German museum curators on a project in the mid 90s and they were shocked at the concept of iced tea, a southern staple.
