I was listening to the radio and I believe the host used to be a commercial or military pilot. He made a comment that cracked me up:

"The only time you have too much fuel is when your on fire!"

My two cents.

The sky above you, the airstrip behind you and a half second ago."

I was working at an FBO years ago & heard this one when a plane was going to land w/o landing gear down & locked -

"God I hope I can land this thing ok"

Heard this in reply but no other planes were in the pattern -

"I hope so too"

Landing pilot started to laugh after landing -

"Thanks God"

As a fighter pilot I know from my own experiences how decisive surprise and luck can be for success, which in the long run comes only to the one who combines daring with cool thinking.

One of the more better ones I can remember from my own cockpit experience:

This was an instructor to a student in a TA-4 Skyhawk that was just switched from LA Center to LA Approach and got abused with 30 seconds of instructions from a rather rude approach controller:

"Tell that B**** that we are tac air and you have dropped your F***ing pencil. We need ***damn vectors."

Normally that wouldn't be all that special, but alas the instructor wasn't on ICS.
After the normal cacaphony of stuck mike calls by all the UHF traffic on the freq. . . we got our vectors.

Today's commerical airliners come with a pilot and a dog. The pilot's job is not to touch anything. The dog's job is to bite the pilot if he does.

I first heard that one when I was working on the 747-400 program at Boeing. The lab I worked in tested all the electronics for the aircraft and had flight deck simulators for all the commercial aircraft.

Boeing's bureaucracy made the federal government's look pathetic, but the job was fun.
