I can only imagine what went into getting all those supplies from the West Coast to Okinawa. That impresses me more than the battle itself.

Almost certainly the Kaiyo. It's a small escort carrier, and she was the only sunk in port by air attack.

I wonder where he got the film clips to post. Some of the footage I have never seen.

Amazing footage.. I was only watching it from the comfort of my man cave and the hairs on the back of my neck went up while I was watching.
Watching those pictures from all that time ago still invoked the fear of the kamikaze and the bravery of all involved in that struggle to the death.

It reminded me also of the World at War episode on Okinawa.
One of the combatants interviewed was part of an AA crew on one of the fleet carriers, and he said that the pressure of the kamikaze drove men to the limits of their endurance,
so much so that at one point, one of his crew members suddenly stood up, yelled 'It's hot today', and threw himself into the ocean.
He was never seen again.

Rocket fell off. A crewman picked it up and threw it overboard.

This was one of those news reel/documentaries produced by the Navy Department to help sell thier cause to various industries, educations and politicos. That is why some of this footage might be new for some of you all. This was a pretty famous documentary reel that I remember watching parts of years ago (like mid-80's) while touring Newport News Drydock company, they used some of the footage of the carriers being struck as examples of why they were so good at their jobs.

Almost certainly the Kaiyo. It's a small escort carrier, and she was the only sunk in port by air attack.

No. This carrier is IJA (not IJN as often written) Shimane Maru (wartime std. 1TL oiler conversion) being attacked 19 Mar '45 at Shido Bay, Kagawa Prefecture by TF 58's aircraft. She was heavily damaged on that same day and finally bombed and sunk 24 Jul '45 at the same location. Two photos of the 19 Mar '45 attack can be seen in Gakken's booklet "Perfect guide, the aircraft carriers of the IJN and IJA" p. 134.

Well, strictly speaking it was TF 57, but you're correct about it being the Shimane Maru. I actually considered her, but misread the data to the effect that she had no elevator, which the ship in the film does.

Yes, agreed with TF 57 instead of TF 58. But not sure if I understand well your sentence about the elevator. SHIMANE MARU was fitted with one front elevator located about 1/3 aft of her bow.

I know, that was my point. I looked at the Shimane Maru, along with the other IJA escort carriers, and mistakenly read the text on the Shimane Maru as if she had no elevator. That's why I initially eliminated her.

Understood. Thanks for clarification. On the other hand, until today, I thought KAIYO was the film's one and incidently came to SHIMANE MARU's pictures above mentioned...Et voilà !
