Playing the AI as Allies on Guadalcanal scenario. Absolutely crushed Japan for the most part and should win my first scenario quite easily...my only problem was their blasted subs patrolling off the coast of Sydney. My ships would get a little banged up and I would send them to repair. I just lost a carrier to a sub. I've tried ASW escorts following them, placing DDs in their TF and just plain old patrolling the coast for the subs. More often than not, I will spot the subs after they fire torps...some hit, some don't. I return fire with DC and rarely hit. How can I assure the safety of a returning carrier better?

Do you have heavy aerial ASW patrols over the water approaches to major ports like Sydney? Even if they don't hit anything they'll often spot the subs for you, allowing you some leeway to route important ships and convoys around them.

Yes, I have spotted the subs from time to time. My situation certainly isn't dire...but still to lose a carrier is a bit much when I take steps to prevent it from happening. My ASW TFs consist of 4 DDs patrolling around and then one I manually move when a sub is spotted. Still, despite the attempts, I have yet to sink a sub. I sunk quite a few midget subs at Tulagi but there is no comparison there. The deep water full subs keep eluding me.

1. Use swallow water when possible.
2. Use air patrol for detect or even attack subs (need good ASW exp). If you lack of pilots with ASW skill then try use pilots with Naval Search skill in Naval search mission (normal range). They often detect subs and bring message Enemy ships 10 knots at xx, xx. Time for send subkillers here.
3. Planes with biggest caliber of bombs in extended range - your sub killers (gather all pilots with best ASW here). ASW mission.
4. Check naval exp for ships participated in escort role - 60+ for KV/PC etc, 70+ for DDs.
5. Include in convoys few ASW ships with best depth of DC. Better if that ships have good maneur and speed.
6. Use ASW patrols in critical hexs.
7. SCTF must have some flying fishs at alt 100 feet (ASW mission pilots with ASW skill) or 6k feet (naval search) and range 0.

Another subject often raised on the forum. Plenty of threads deal with it.

I particularly like the following thread.

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2889330&mpage=1&key=asw%2Coperations

Whilst it started off discussing the in game benefits of deploying wolfpacks, knowing how best to use subs offensively leads to understanding how to combat them. In any case further along the thread also deals with ASW operations and includes a couple of links to older relevant threads.

I would however caution against the OP maintaining this attitude, particularly when he graduates to a campaign game:

"... to lose a carrier is a bit much when I take steps to prevent it from happening ..."

In war you cannot control everything. There is no money back guarantee that you will not suffer losses even when counter measures have been deployed.

Oh I agree. It was mainly about mitigating risk. Had I taken all the best precautions available to me and still lost the carrier, then it is what it is. I simply want to make sure I am doing everything I can first instead of just writing the loss off to 'war is hell'.

+1

Things will, and often go wrong no matter the counter efforts you employ. Some are just more painful than others.
