That's some assignment. Are we allowed to answer one or two at a time??

What are your favourite names for the following. They must have fought in WWII to be eligible but can be from any country:

- favourite fighter-Hellcat
- bomber-B-29. I love how it looks.
- aircraft carrier-USS Enterprise. The story of that ship just never ceases to amaze me. If it were brought up as the subject of a movie it would have been rejected as unrealistic.
- battleship-Yamato!
- cruiser
- other ship type-USS Caine. I'm not sure if fiction is allowed but that's my answer for "other ship"
- Tank-Tiger
- Other AFV-USS Nautilus. If medals were given out for effort the skipper would have the Medal of Honor.

This is tough - there are so many great names, and its difficult to divorce the names from the performance/looks of the various ships, planes and fighting vehicles. But FWIW here are mine:

- favourite fighter = Spitfire
- bomber = Avenger
- aircraft carrier = Ark Royal
- battleship = Warspite
- cruiser = Penelope
- other ship type = Cossack
- Tank = Panther
- Other AFV = Kangaroo

Since we are talking names only;

- favourite fighter = Buffalo. I mean come on, Buffalo for a FLYING unit?!
- bomber = Mosquito
- aircraft carrier = Shangri-La
- battleship = Richelieu
- cruiser = Indefatiguable (Hornblower fan here)
- other ship type = Cod
- Tank = Maus (talk about ironic name)
- Other AFV = Dingo

Interesting choices terje439. I had never thought of Buffalo like that before . I like Shangri-La and Richelieu too.

Oh man those are cool. I really love the Buffalo and Mosquito.

I must admit to being partial to warspite as my favorite battleship.

Panther is my favorite name for a tank.

Mmm a lack of thought there. Apologies - I think we should split bombers into:

Level Bombers (Strategic)
Torpedo / Dive Bombers (Naval)
Bombers (Tactical)

That being the case, Avenger remains as the naval bomber
Bomber (Strategic) = Wellington
Bomber (Tactical) = Typhoon

You have a few there that I was considering but ultimately lost out: Neptune, Unicorn and Hurricane .

I cheated and named two where I had trouble deciding which one to pick. I was close to name Wellington alongside with Lancaster

Warspite: Info Favorites

Fighter: Corsair (1st A/C that I was allowed to start up on the Tarmac)

Bomber: B25 (Flew as passenger on this bird a few times)

Carrier: USS Hornet (had many shipmates from her)

Battleship: USS Missouri (Japanese surrender sign on her deck)

Cruiser: USS Indianapolis (she carried A Bomb to Siapan)

Other type: Blimps (good anti-submarine weapon)

Tank: Tiger II (Hell, I just liked her trim)

AFV: Airfield Crash Truck (they were nice to be near, when we landed)

Thanks to those who have bothered voting so far.

There are a few close battles for favourite name; Mosquito has a couple of votes in the bomber category, while Avenger takes the lead in the naval aircraft category. But I think, even at this early stage, the best name for a battleship is pretty much decided; in the lead with 40,673 votes is HMS Warspite

You can't beat the Mosquito for sheer beauty of lines, I think.

The Ki-46 "Dinah" series is also a beautiful aircraft.

Speaking of the Dinah, you should add a recce aircraft section to your categories.

"Oh, Warspite." (Nate shakes his head slowly and sadly.) "Not many recce types DIDN'T have names like the fighters and bombers."
(Nate understands Warspite's extensive naval knowledge and can't understand this.)

Warspite1 (chuckling to himself in (understandably) superior fashion, given the young natesters inability to understand the situation).

nate, nate, nate. I am aware that recce types may have names. What I was referring to was you talking about the Mosquito's lines - made it sound like you were voting for her beauty, and not her name. This comment came on the back of a couple of posts from people that, judging by their answers, had clearly not read the question

(nate25 shuffles away, head down and suitably embarrassed by his faux pas "gee I wish I wish I could learn stuff and be smart and cool like that top English bloke").

Boulton-Paul Defiant, Bought my first Airfix kit a Boulton Paul Defiant. How can something painted all black be of any interest coz the name is all bells and whistles.

Must admit I do like the name Kettenkrad
