Hello Folks

I have just bought and donwloaded distant Worlds and its two expansions.
I have not begun to install because I just wanted to check the procedure I should follow.

after I install the base game must I update it or patch it before I install the first expansion?

I guess what I want to know the correct procedure I should follow to successfully install the three download packages and end up with DW-Legends up to the latest edition.

I did look around the forum and do a search on 'installation' but found nothing...but I apologise in advance if I missed an obvious link or thread.

Thank You

Siddham

Just install the base game, RotS then Legends. Update to latest patch (official or the much nicer beta). That's all I did when I installed and things are running smooth.

Follow what Shadow Tiger just said. I install the original DW then started it up just to make sure it would run properly. I did the same process for each expansion. Then updated to the latest beta patch 1.7.0.12 which seems very stable. I installed original DW for a friend who was running Windows 7 and received an error message when trying to start it up. He was missing two Directsound files. I fixed the problem and continued on with the next install. No sense taking the time to install everything and then run into problems. Test each step, one at a time.

By the way, welcome to the Forum.

Thank you folks for the replies, advice and welcome :)

I have installed the game and registered etc and all looks good to go.
I am up to the official 1.7.0.6 patch.
Should I install the public beta 1.7.0.12...?
Or hold off for now and play with the offical patch?

I'm currently playing with the 1.7.0.10 patch and there are two or three oddities I do not particularly care for, but I have found it incredibly stable. I am in the vast minority here, so take this with a grain of salt, but I would recommend sticking with 1.7.0.6 for a while. Yet if you do upgrade to .12, I am sure you won't have any serious issues with it. Basically, you can't go wrong.

Just to post what I did.

I installed each package and updated and registered it before installing the next.

Glad I did that now having read feelotraveller's comments in the linked thread..where it is said that if you dont fully update RotS before installing Legends you will be missing some graphical elements included in a RotS patch.
If what feelotraveller's wrote is correct I guess I think there should be a sticky giving this kind of information for new players...and that Matrix games should provide installation instructions.

Anyway I have not started to play yet but I have been reading the Galactopedia and some in-depth reviews from an excellent site http://www.spacesector.com/

Thank you for replies and advice

Those missing tech icons that feelotraveller mentions are the Ion Cannon and Ship Scanner icons, I believe. They are replaced correctly in the Legends install. No patch after RoTS expansion and before Legends expansion is necessary.

Sorry, my mistake.  Just checked and they have updated this with one of the more recent patches.  Must have missed it in the patch notes.

I will stop handing out bad information.
