Guys,

Forgive me for posting this here but I am unable to download any scenarios from the Games Depot at the Wargamer site. Further, they are apparently clueless over there and seem unable to tell me if the Games Depot is broken or if it is a problem at my end.

Is anyone here able to download anything from the Games Depot at Wargamer?

Best wishes,
Steve

I can't download anything either. I know that people at the Age of Rifles Yahoo Group are unhappy because they can't download the dozens of AoR scenarios in the Games Depot.

Redcoat,

Thanks. At least I am not the only one experiencing difficulties. Do you know if the problem is a recent thing or has it been on-going for some time?

I don't know anything about Age of Rifles. Is it a good game?

Best wishes,
Steve

if it's the Age Of Rifles i'm familiar with it is/was a very good game. The one I'm familiar with was release 1993-95 or there abouts. I didn't realize it would run on Win 7.

You’re thinking of the very game Rick. It is a DOS game, but you can get it to work with Win 7, Vista or XP.

Shunwick, the game’s graphics are ancient, but Norm Koger designed the game engine.

Guys,

Ah, the Blessed Norm as he is known in the TOAW forum. It has pedigree then.

Still, if it's 93-95 (or there abouts) game it might be difficut to get hold of. I will keep an eye out at bootsales for it since it comes recommended and especially if there is still a community of hard core fans playing it. Is it Win 95 or DOS?

Best wishes,
Steve

It certainly has pedigree. AoR and the original TOAW were two of my first computer wargames. It is a DOS game and so I think most people play it with an emulator - such as DOSBox (Link) - nowadays. The Yahoo Group (Link) is a good place to get tech advice and to find opponents and scenarios. The game can be downloaded from so-called Abandonware sites – at your own risk. Norm Koger has said that he does not mind if people download it and no company owns the rights to it anymore.

Redcoat,

Thanks for the links. I will check them out. Not sure about the Abandonware sites and "at your own risk" comment though. I rely heavily on my computer and I cannot afford to have something screw it up. I get very nervous with the thought of visitng dodgy sites.

Best wishes,
Steve

PS: Can I ask? How do you reduce a link to the word "link"? That's quite good and I would like to able to do that.

Highlight the word you want to use for your link and press the link button. Then add the URL.

Redcoat,

Thank you.

I have raised the issue of the Games Depot over at Wargamer for both old TOAW scenarios (my issue) and also for the Age of Rifles scenarios (for the AoR guys). It is being looked at. And thanks again. You have helped me out enormously over the last couple of days.

Best wishes,
Steve

You’re most welcome. I like to be of use to somebody every now and then.

Thanks for raising the issue about the missing scenarios over at the Wargamer.

I’ve just been to the Wargamer again and found that there are two menus for scenarios. The menu I used yesterday ( http://www.wargamer.com/community/gamesdepot/ ) is full of dead links whereas the other menu ( http://www.wargamer.com/gamesdepot/ ) seems to work for me. The people at the AoR Yahoo Group must have been using the menu that does not work.

Redcoat,

I tried the second one but it still does not work for the scenarios I want to download. It will allow me to download some but not others. Hopefully, they will get things fixed. I will try again in a couple of days.

Best wishes,
Steve

gsteve441,

Well, good for you. There's nothing quite as exciting as losing lots of money on internet slot machines. I wish you every success in this endeavour.

Best wishes,
Steve
