At it again - vicberg(axis) vs. Larry Larizona55 (Sov)

Post by vicberg »

I'm starting at turn 3.

First turn was pretty basic. Lvov pocket. AGC pocket north of Brest. AGN blasted through lines. I tried the Riga Gambit and it almost always works. With 2 tank divs, it didn't. I guess bad rolling. 2 Corps from PZG 2 went south to help with the Lvov pocket. From an SU standpoint, I set all corps to 1 and all highers to 3 or higher so save on some APs.

Second turn was a bit different for me. Larry put a very forward defense, stacking behind the Daguava River in force. I sent 2 Corps from PZG 3 north to help pocket just short of Pskov. In the center elements of PZG 3 and PZG 2 formed a Minsk Pocket. In the south, the Lvov pocket was slowly collapsed and PZG 1 and elements of PZG 2 did the "Pelton" push into the middle. No pockets, just territory.

Third turn. 16th and 18th armies took Riga and started the collapse of the pocket along the Daguava. AGC collapsed the Minsk pocket and pushed towards the Dnepr. AGS pushed PZG1 to the south and formed a couple of pockets around Vinnitsa. The 2 corps from PZG 2 helped defend the flanks.

Turn 4

AGN takes Pskov and the pocket around Daugava river falls. Elements of PZG2 and PZG3 *almost* pocket a large force south of Pskov. If I had a bit more fuel I would have done it. Alas, I'm not sure he'll be able to pull out and I'll be able to close it next turn.

In the center, forces push for Smolensk and the Denpr.

In the South, the Vinnista pocket is slowly collapsed. The Denpr is crossed.

Turn 7

Soviet Losses are over 1.6 million and 128 destroyed divisions. My AFV losses are light at 850. Armaments Points are 70k. Less than I would like, but I've been attacking in many places.

In the north, 18th Army is meeting light resistance in route to Leningrad.

The 16th Army is closing a pocket. I was going to send PZG4 more south, but he's not been able to form solid defensive lines yet, so I've decided to stretch his forces. PZG4 is taking the northern route towards Moscow. Possibly a mistake because of the heavily forested area, but a calculated risk. PZG3 and elements of PZG2 form another small pocket and move east towards Moscow.

In the south, the bridgehead is expanded and a another pocket formed around Kharkov. It's a fairly weak pocket, so I won't be surprised if he's able to break it next turn.

Man, you're learning fast. Nicely done. [:)]

One bit of advice (which may be moot), be sure to clear your rear areas.
You have (or at least had) a bad habit of neglecting unspotted enemy units in your rear.
Can't see the Pripet marshes in your screen-shots, but those need to be cleared by your Sec divisions or the lone cavalry unit you have.
Always assume any enemy-controlled hex, even if surrounded, contains a unit that can cut your RR links.

Yep, but in our game, I advanced so poorly that I have virtually all of my railroads already converted from Germany to the front. They are sitting around right now, wishing for summer offensive to begin.
