Status: offline 		In my recent turn, CV Enterprise was bottomed by 3 torpedo hits from a Japanese sub which is a sudden death and It didn't help much with 9 DD as escort and Halsey as leader.IIRC, the escorts are always on the passive side in ASW combats, while dedicated ASW TF has some probability to attack subs first to prevent them from launching torpedo, so is it better way to have your carrier TF following an ASW TF to get more protection from subs? Secondly, since the maximum number of ship involves in one ASW battle is four, what's the point to have more than four DDs in carrier TF?

Status: offline 		Well, you're unlikely to ONLY face subs and those DD's are good for other things. It's a safety margin thing.

Status: offline 		In sub infested waters an ASW TF as lead is always a good option, not only for CV protection.

The best weapon against subs in open water is always airborne ASW and navS though. The higher the DL of the sub, the
lower the chances of the sub attacking first.

Concerning number of DD´s, IMHO you cna never have enough of em, don´t forget that they add surface combat and AAA
strenght to a CV TF as well. It does make sense to use more than 4, but this always depens on availability and general TF
setting, everybody has his personal preferences here.

The 4 ship limitation for ASW TF was implemented to prevent the player from making this TF type overpowered.

Status: offline 		If you are not in danger of KB then put up a lot of air on both Naval search and ASW. You can't have too much. Like said above, if you spot the sub first there is much less danger.

Best thing is to keep away from subs. Alter your routes, try to avoid choke points, don't linger and stay out of shipping lanes. Japanese subs are a bit over powered at start and can be deadly to capital ships in 1942. I have been lucky and not lost a big ship but I would say that in two and a half years of war, I have had a least a dozen carriers torpedoed and probably more BBs. Saratoga has been torpedoed three or four times.

If you have CVEs, send one ahead of your TF with TBFs on search and ASW. Throw in a few esorts. It is much easier to get over the loss of a CVE.

Status: offline 		Upgrade your CL/CA FPs to Kingfisher. Train them at 1000' and range 0 in ASW. Once they get trained up (above 60), set them at 1000' and about 50% (20% train and 20% rest) with range 2 (actually 1). Set one or two ship worth of FPs to night mission. I rather leave my DBs on 10 to 20% naval search and use my FPs for ASW patrol.

Status: offline 		On dec 9 1941, on my game against Karsten, Lexington sunk from a single torpedo hit.
Shortly afterwards, on the 28th Saratoga took 2 torpedoes SW of Pearl with 21 SD and 35 FD she made it back to Pearl for a stretch in dry dock.

Status: offline 		Ouch! That would be pretty rare. I had Lex take two hits and only had 14 flotation damage. It is enough to give you nightmares...

Status: offline 		Theres a real Long Lance Torpedo outside at the naval acadamy in Annapolis, actually the aerial variant is to, this thing is a BEAST! You have no idea how big this sucker is until your standing next to it. I have no idea how they could manipulate this fish and aim it at speed.

Status: offline 		There was no "aerial variant" of the "long lance." Nor was there a "submarine variant." They were different torpedoes. One offshoot of the Type 93 (long lance) were used later in the war for submarines (the Type 95), to streamline production, but they had much smaller explosive charges in the warheads; they were comparable in warhead weight, and inferior in explosive power, than contemporary USN submarine torpedoes.
