But what exactly is Steam? I see it mentioned from time to time and I googled it but I still don't understand it. Are they game publishers like Matrix and Shrapnel or something else?

Best wishes,
Steve

Steam is an electronic store front that sells games. They're run by a game publisher called Valve, but sell most other publishers' games as well, aside from EA.

Terminus,

Thanks, but I think I already understand that much. But there is a link on the Steam site saying you can download Steam for free. If they are just a shop front why do I have to download anything?

Best wishes,
Steve

What you download is the Steam client, which you actually use to buy games, organise your library of Steam titles, install and uninstall, etc. This client also functions as DRM.

You can't actually do anything with the Steam website, aside from sign up for a Steam account, download the client and visit their forums.

Terminus,

I am afraid to ask... What is a DRM?

I am an old guy. I should not have to worry about things like this...

Best wishes,

Some hate it, some don't. For me it worked flawless... sofar. It keeps all of your games installed under Steam updated too. You can either buy directly from Steam, so you don't have a boxed cd on your shelf, only digital on your HD/SSD, *or* you can buy it in a store and then add that game to your Steam account. Steam then also keeps that game updated. So yeah pro's and con's.
Me personally I still have mixed feelings about Steam.
Oh, and Steam topics usually degrade into Steam bashing topics

DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. It's the process by which publishers mean to keep their games from being pirated. Games released on Steam use the system as the DRM.

This is one thing you should probably just try to ignore. If we look at it objectively, Steam provides a good, easy-to-use store front and game management service. Unfortunately, some people hate it. Don't worry about it.

Terminus, Josh, and Max 86,

Thanks for trying to illuminate the darkness. I think I will just go back to not understanding the modern world. It's easier that way.

Best wishes,
Steve

My main objection to Steam is that Steam games that are bought in retail stores with discs still demand Steam account and internet connection to Steam in order to play them (at least once).

Steam also offers no guarantee that Steam is available and hence no guarantee that the game you bought are playable.

This is no big deal in my opinion but I do not like it. So my solution is that I do not buy Steam games. I am more fond of how Matrix do business so I buy their games instead.

Edit: With that said I think Terminus is right when he said:

It's so Steam can control your computer and use it as a bot..... Don't believe anything Terminus says..He's been "Steamed" for a long time......

All joking aside, its not a horrible thing but a lot of people hate it. I know I do but I have about 30 or so games using it.Some things just will not work correctly and their customer service can be poor a lot of times. I'm batting about 50% on CS.

They do have great sales every now and then.

Steam is EVIL...just kidding.

shunwick I think Steam is just fine. Terminus provided you a great explanation of Steam. Good luck.

I try to stay in the 1940s myself. Chicks dressed better! I don't use it myself and not sure I understand the need. I do digital downloads from here frequently and other sites too and never have any problems.

AH, just adds to the mystique. Too much is shown these days. Women should be wrapped in cloth from head to toe(multiple layers) and in the kitchen making cookies.

Oh, don't tell Mrs. Parusski Steiner...PLEASE.

In theory, you don't own a game in Steam. If they die, your games are gone.
But as long as they're alive, I think we're fine. And I suppose they'll be the last online store to die.

I would hope it would be Matrix that is the last online store

Not sure I agree - I don't think Dame Judi Dench looks slutty

One thing mr Hunwick might want to know is that Steam also "supports" small Indie developers, Steam makes their games available on their platform. These small Indie developers otherwise never ever would've found such a huge potential audience. The "old school Role Playing Games" you used to play ... uhm, a quarter of a century ago? They're still there... and very easy to buy via Steam. Sometimes *dirt* cheap.
You have to search for them, but there are a lot of hidden gems in the Steam Store.
