I've played about 10 SAI scenarios, and now I'm stuck in Operational Jutland, a scenario worthy of deep study. In my opinion, this is the best naval wargame I've played since the days of Action Stations!

I like the graphics. While they are Spartan, for me they evoke the maps contained in the books I have dealing with Jutland. And they are functional. Frankly, this is my most satisfactory game purchase in a very long time. If you are interested in the subject, do yourself a favor.

(To Terminus: How does it help the rest of us, for you to denigrate a game you obviously have not played?)

Johnnie could you answer this for me?

1)It looked like at one moment in the AAR that there was a red 'dot' on one of the ships when viewed close up. Does the game show hits on the ships themselves in addition to the Event Log?

2)Are there any plans for a demo that you know of?

I am really leaning towards a purchase here.

I don't think there is any representation of hits on the graphic of the ship (not sure and can't test now.) For your own ship you can get a detailed damage report, by clicking on the ship. For an enemy ship the fog of war limits you to "light damage," "medium damage," etc. when you hover your mouse over the enemy ship. If you are into the subject, buy it! I guarantee you will like it. If the subject is not you cup of tea, who knows.

When ships fire, there are coloured lines that shows who is firing at who with what. A red dot in the center of a ship means that at least a shell hit her.

Each ship has a "card" that can be called up. On it there is all the data inherent that ship, and a silohuette that shows damaged components (turrets etc.) Furthermore there is an additional button that brings up a more detailed damage report for that ship.

Not that I know of

By George, you're right. You're always right. It's a done deal. Just have to wait a bit because I am currently testing another game.

To tell you the truth, I bought WITP AE with the hopes that I would get my feet wet with a good Pacific Theater game only to find that the kind of detail it offers is way beyond my ability to comprehend. I just couldn't find a rhythm with it and thought that for it to be better for what I was wanting, much more of it would be automated such as supplies, plane rotation, breakdown cruises, training, rest etc. The one thing I didn't want automated was enemy task force targeting, but it is in fact one of the things out of the players hands in WITP. My idea PTO game I think would be a hybrid of a strategic one mixed with tactical engagements. Think of watching digital planes taking off from carriers and watching them attack distant targets. SAI, in a way, seems like a realistic sea variant of Distant World battles, which to me is a good thing.

One more question for those who know. Is the map zoom tied in with the scroll wheel? I have a hard time with games that don't include this feature tbo. I hope that it is.

Ive been playing Witp/WitpAe almost none stop since 1 July 04-it is a work of art. Even though Ive never master it.....I still have not learn the Japanese side the way I should have. Not all Yankee's are bad., I am playing one Witp friend (Roger)(from Cin Ohio)and I haven't beat him yet out of 3 or 4 games(He's better at than me). I think if you were to really get into it-you would probley like it. I am thinking of getting SAI, looks interesting.

All in good fun. Some of the prettiest places I've been to and best people I've met have been up north. Good people everywhere as far as I'm concerned. Heck, I even say sure-ya-betcha sometimes.

You need to buy this title so I can ask a bunch of questions. Just do what I do and don't mention it to the missus unless she asks. One thing mine has learned is not to ask about my games. She knows it could lead into an hour long presentation much to her dismay. She steers clear.

Quick funny story. Some years ago I taught my 10 y.o. nephew Axis and Allies and our first real game he makes some incredible moves that I never thought he would and caught me completely by surprise. His strategy was sound and final. I remember wincing when he made that first fateful move after I realized how vulnerable I had left an area and when I groaned he says 'Oh, can't I do that?'. And I was thinking I cannot believe he did that. I was only able to slow him down after that. We quit with victory inevitable. Every single time he would visit I had to get that game back out until one day I gave it to him to take home. You'd think I gave him a thousand dollars.

lol...willpower schmillpower. Good luck and keep us informed. I think the developer is talking about adding an even slower speed to the game which sounds good. I love options.

No, not possible in the engine supposedly IIRC But they have added hot keys for zoom.

You might look at the War Plan Pacific demo over at Shrapnel Games, sounds closer to what you were looking for in your Pacific game.

The co-designer/lead programmer wants to make a remake of TF1942, he needs 3D artists

Nice to hear people are still playing TF1942. I was co-designer and lead programmer on the project. I've been working at home on a new game that combines 1942: the Pacific Air War and Taskforce: 1942. I wrote both games and have wanted to re-do them both. The engine is mostly written at this point, but the problem is art. I have talked a couple of artists into helping me out, but they lack my enthusiasm to work in my spare time. So although I still work on it, the project will never really go anywhere until I get more art support. Sims aren't seen as big money makers, so I won't get any monetary support unless I've got something pretty much done....

If I was the artist we would be back to stick figures, and ships would be recatagles of various sizes.. tf 42 was right up there with some fun atlantic sea warfare from ww2.. great naval battles.. seems with the 386 486 dual core quad core etc advances.. where processing now at speds only dreamed of in the 90's.. there should be some good sims out there... I wonder why all these titles and aces of the deap and red baron all seem to be replaced, by consoles that really are trash.. pretty trash but still..
I guess it pays though.. 500 milion iin slaes the FIRST day for the most recent  consel blockbuster! wow

It is possible to add the scroll wheel zoom. I use the same map/globe component in a number of applications (hmm, this applies to SAI and I don't know if that is the game this query was about). The scroll wheel zoom is a royal pain to add but it is possible by listening for Windows Messages http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms645617%28v=vs.85%29.aspx .

Thanks for the info. Too bad on the zoom but at least it has a hotkey for it.

I'll check out War Plan Pacific. Thanks again.

I am an HPS addict, but even their Midway game with carriers, I found disappointing. Takes forever to get things moving and feedback is poor. Steam & Iron is truly a gem. And a ship editor, which Midway has not. War Plan Pacific is okay and moddable to an extent. But its dev and any future support for the game has been non-existent.
