Taken from the rules:
CV Escort Mission
A covering force for Transport TFs that sweep the seas of those pesky surface raiders and subs. This is a variation of Air Combat just with smaller/slower carriers and is limited to 25 ships.

A few questions:
1) The description implies this does exactly the same as an Air Combat mission - is this really true?

2) Whats the best mix of planes and plane missions to make it an effective ASW escort? I was thinking 9 fighters for CAP and 18 Dive Bombers set on 100% ASW at 1000 feet? Also i assume Search Arcs NOT defined works best?

2a) Quick question related to the airplane ASW mission - whilst doing this are they also effectiovely doing an ordinary Search mission albeit at reduced effect because of short range and lower height?

3) How best to used this mission? Follow a transport TF or have the Transports follow it, or roam on ahead to clear the way?

Thanks
Sanderz

DB or TB (using bombs) will work, their training is what matters - high 60s in ASW & LowN. 1000' is right, but 100% isn't - alternate between 50/50 ASW/Training & ASW/Rest to keep morale high. When you do find a target, switch to 100 ASW for the next day. You can't run continuous 100% ops and retain effectiveness over time.

Could even run 20% Naval Search and 40% ASW to optimize the coverage.

I also have an ASW group with the CVE's with a very aggressive TF commander to hopefully react to the target(s).

I never used CVEs for sub chasing... so can't really say. Given their slowish speed and bad maneuverability I think if CVE met submarine the CVE would be the party that ends up worse off, and a CVE is a much more valuable asset than a sub. If you do use them I imagine the main bonus of the CVE would be up to up the detection factor of any subs nearby so accompanying ASW can better attack them. Subs seem to be able to blast CVs with scary regularity so I think a high DF doesnt necessarily make the CVE resistant to the sub though....

CV Escort is the same as Air Combat aside from the ships you can put in it, yes.

I imagine dive bombers would be better than torpedo bombers as they use heavier bombs. (This assuming we're talking Allied CVEs). Allied submarines will generally survive 250kg bomb hits. I guess the Japs are more fragile but even so, a 1000lb bomb from an SBD is going to be more effective than a 500lb one from an Avenger.

In some circumstances I will put a CVE on ASW work. Especially, if my opponent is trying to interdict mid ocean shipping lanes. However, for the most part, you LBA searches combined with pretty overwhelming Naval ASW assets make them redundant. By 1944 I really do not have enough Japanese subs to keep my numerous PFs, DEs, SC, and PCs busy. It unfortunately works for both sides but any convoy that is escorted will usually result in the sub targeting the escort, then missing. After than your Allied escorts will pound the sub. So best ASW in my opinion is to run your escorted TFs over the sub....

To address your other question about who should follow whom.... I would put the CVE in the lead by a hex or two. Put up a fan search ahead of the path of advance. If a sub is sighted, go around it with your convoy while detaching an ASW TF to "keep it down" either permenantly (sinking) or tactically (so the convoy can slide by). Hal
