I would like to be able to select ships by type if possible as a group,

Hotkey

1= Escorts.
2= Frigates.
3= Destroyers.
4= Cruisers.
ETC.

It maybe wiser to leave the ships on auto,to protect mining stations for example,but I find controling ships that are not under AI control,to be problomatic to say the least,the Galaxy is a very big place and trying to track down where your ships are,to find your nearest Escort or Frigate and order it to attack pirates!

There is a select nearest military ship command to find the closest ship (useful for combating pirates).

I'm not exactly sure what you are suggesting, though.  Are you suggesting a button to select ships of the same type in a system?

My main concern is the AI ability to protect my systems infastructure,there are times that I have more than enough Escorts,Frigates and Destroyers available to defend and protect all my Minebases etc,and yet the AI still leaves some unprotected, and these are the ones that the pirates attack off course,when playing big Galaxy games,there is more than enough to do without having to micro manage system defence,I make sure I have plenty off Escorts and Frgates built that should be enough to protect my system mining infrastructure,but time and again the AI still leaves some undefended!

You are playing Legends? You can set task force fleets to protect a system,systems or sector and it works pretty well.

Pirates have to be effective at being annoying or why have them in the game.

What Ashbery said; you can make a few small fleets and have them protect critical areas.  I tend to pay off pirates if they are about to take out something I don't want to lose and make sure I get it well protected so as not to have the same problem again.

Also, I'm still not really clear what your proposal is.

I think the solution would be a command to find the nearest player military ship that doesn't already have any orders issued to it by the player, that possible?

Well, speaking to the larger point of fleet control rather than pirates, speaking as a relative newbie I can say that I think the whole ship/fleet UI leaves a great deal to be desired.

Part of the problem is the UI's rather distressing tendency in various places to refer to ships by their (colorful but useless) name, instead of by ship type. E.g. in the construction yard menu, you either have to recognize the ship profile or click on Show Construction Summary to know what's being built.

Similarly, when you select a fleet you are presented with an array of ship icons, but nowhere (at least I haven't found it) is there a list that says this fleet consists of so many escorts, destroyers, etc. And there is apparently no split fleet dialog either. Which means that it is so much trouble to rearrange fleets that I simply leave them the way they are and construct new ones if necessary.

This may be a bit tangential to the OP's point, but it's been bothering me, so I horned in.

I name my designs by a code...

For example. An Escort would be named ES. Then if I had three of them, they would be ES-1 and so on...

You can add letters to help subdivide them. FFE for a frigate armed with close support weapons to fight fighters, or CAB for a Cruiser with bombardment.... I find it a lot easier then to figure out what a ship is at a glance from its name.

By the way...in the bottom left corner, when you are clicked on a fleet..it will show you little icons of every ship in that fleet, and their current fuel levels (as a little green line). You can use those icons to pick individual ships of the fleet, to give orders to such as leave fleet.

Thanks for the reply.

My issue is not the names of the ship classes, my issue is that on many screens (e.g. the F10 construction yard screen) the ship's NAME ("Extravagant Bluff") is shown as being built, instead of what class it is. I don't particularly care what the name of the ship being built is, I want to know what it is.

Also, I know about the icons on the fleet screen but....have you ever played Europa Universalis? In that game when you bring up a fleet menu, you get a handy little split fleet button you can click on which brings up a second fleet screen and you can transfer ships back and forth to your heart's content. DW could use something like that. The closest thing I've discovered is the F11 screen, filter by military ships, and then sort by fleet, but it's a bit awkward.
