I'm curious if anyone actually ever uses the "group reserve" feature? And if you do, what do you use it for?

It seems way too micromanagy to me to go through your air groups and purposely stand down pilots, etc. And they seem to activate spontaneously anyway, so I'm not sure there would be any point..?

It seems to me to be just an extra unecessary pool for pilots. Wouldn't it be easier if pilots were just either in a group (possibly with delay, that seems to work ok), or not in a group? Why do they need to ever be deactivate/activated? I ask because I spend an average of a couple of minutes each turn activating pilots in various group reserves when after almost 2 full games of WITP:AE, I have never once felt the urge to deactivate them or put them into group reserve. I'm curious if there are different opinions on this, and if not, what is the feature for?

I use it quite a bit, but not for the purpose of resting pilots (which I believe was the intention of the developers).

For training squadrons, I put the more advanced pilots for the skill I am currently training into the group reserve. This way, it seems to give the rookies a greater chance of improving the skill being trained for. I do this for units "training by combat" as well. I currently have Malaybalay isolated and use airfield attacks targeted there to increase the experience of my bomber pilots. I monitor the pilots' experience levels and set the more experienced guys on reserve (the game seems to use the most experienced pilots for missions, so this way I can get the less-experienced guys flying missions).

I also use it to transfer pilots specifically from one group directly to another. If I want 10 fighter pilots to go from one specific squadron to another, I first put the guys to be transferred into the group reserve. Then, I go the the receiving squadron and hit "select veteran". I then go to the "groups" sub-pool and sort by group name. This makes it very quick and easy to find the specific guys I want.

Yes, I micromanage. But, if you ask me, that's the only way to play this game. Get every minute advantage that you can, especially as the Japanese player - you're going to need it.

never used it. Useless. I want all my pilots to be eligible for flying duties cause it helps to keep the avg fatigue levels low...

Have you ever noticed that very experienced pilots are really less prone to get fatigued?

My ELITE squadron (12 pilots in a 7 planes group) has an avg exp of 94 and even at 100%LRCAP (3 hexes) only accumulates 10 fatigue points every 2 days!...while a squadron with an avg exp of 50 for the same distance of LRCAP accumulates more than 40 fatigue points every 2 days

Completely agreed here. I now favor a fighter pilot who is 60 Exp and 60 Air over a pilot who is 50 Exp and 70 Air in almost every regard. When it's fighting time, my pilots get flown hard and long until the battle is over. Keeping their fatigue low, and when casualties happen, their morale high, is more important than 10 points of air skill. Obviously a pilot who is 60 Exp and 70 Air is better than both.

Regarding the Group Reserve Pool, while I dont use it...and I cant think of any reason why a player would...the game definitely uses it to rotate out fatigued pilots which is very valuable to me as a player. Keeps fatigue down, with lessons casualties which keeps morale up, which keeps more planes in the air and thus even fewer casualties, etc, etc.

It's March 1943(c) and I dont think we have ONE pilot with 94 experience. How on earth do they get to that level? I don't think Wilt Chamberlain even had that level of experience.

I train my TB pilots in NavT and NavB. When it's time to flip them from a TB to a DB training unit, I put them in group reserve. Then I can see at a glance who is available to move to the other unit. Makes life very easy for what can be a horrendous task.
