Good job! One more attack should do it at Wake. He lost 30% of his remaining troops (which would be most of his fighting troops) while you only lost 10%. You also got the forts down to 1. You should attack again within the next two days before he rebuilds any forts.

The div unit is under severe penalties on a 6,000 size atoll. I won't use divisions in the future for small atoll invasion.

One of the other posters (Crackaces, maybe) has stated that you must overstack to have enough strength to take a well-developed atoll. I think that is true until you get the forts down but then you can remove some troops and let the rest finish the defenders. Bombing/bombardment to disrupt them is a also part of the formula.
Good luck in your assault.

If I could offer some advice, the key to taking a small atoll is to overstack by quite a bit. However, to pull it off, you need plenty of ships that are loaded with only supplies and if the battle takes longer than a day it is helpful to have some supply ships in reserve. LSTs are great since they unload immediately.

Cheers,
CC

Thanks Commander Cody, I actually did what you advised. My transports unloading supplies everyday at the beach and the troops on the atoll were never short of supply. I think the problem is the stack cost of 3rd Marine Division, which is about 13000 thus more than twice of the 6,000 cap, which put 3rd Marine Div under great penalties thus be only 1/10 of its original effectiveness.

I draw my conclusion from comparing the tank unit and the div unit. With a 3:1 winning odd, the disruption of 3rd Marine Div rose to 70+, and the tank unit's disruption stayed low. That's why the next day I ordered the tank unit to attack alone and successfully took the island.

And that's why next time I'm going to try 3 regiments instead of a whole division and see how they perform.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Oct 02, 43

After days of preparation, 1st Cavalry (Spec) Cavalry Division was sent to Ailinglaplap and helps the US troops on the beach took the large atoll in one day.

The Japs troops on the atoll was greatly weakened by non-stopping bombing and bombardment, the AV there drops from 600+ to 220, and Allies took the atoll without much trouble for this time.

The fall of Ailinglaplap marks that the Gilbert-Marshall Campaign comes to the end. And Allies won a clear victory with some price.

Well done! Over 15,000 enemy wiped out and a key island secured.

Too bad about Sunfish's miss, especially now that your torps work most of the time. I would check the skipper's Naval rating when the sub returns to port. It should be at least in the high sixties. He did have to dodge a heavy escort though, which may affect his firing position and chance for a hit.

And at the same day, hundreds of Allies' next generation fighters swept Kusaie Island, the Japanese stronghold 450 miles west of Marshall Islands, after that, Allies 4E bombers came in and destroyed the airfield there.

We lost about 60 Corsairs(2 months worth production) and 20 4E bombers in this action, but I call it necessary sacrifice, because we need to the secure our flank and make sure the Japs won't show up when I'm retrieving the 3 divisions on Ailinglaplap.

October, 1943.

The end of Gilbert-Marshall Campaign

After wiping out the 30,000 Japs on the Ailinglaplap, the Battle of Marshall ends officially.

The Gilbert-Marshall Campaign lasted for 6 months, Allies landed on 9 different atolls and eliminated more than 60,000 Japs completely. And the price Allies paid is grief too. We suffered over 20,000 casualties, 1st and 3rd Marine Division both lost half of their fighting capacity and will require months to recover.

However, this is a great achievement for Allies on the Pacific. We expanded our line 1,000 miles to the west from Hawaii. And we are posing a direct threat to the Mariana and Solomon Islands, which will draw hundreds of thousands of Japs to defend those areas. The current available intelligence showed that over 500,000 Japs have already been deployed in those key bases all over the Pacific. But I'm expecting Hongye San to reinforce those areas even more.

All Aussie armor units and 1/4 of US armors units were sent to the battle of Portland Roads. Hundreds, maybe thousands of M3 General Lee and M4 Sherman were used in this battle. However, tanks are really useless in AE. No way I can use those tanks to break through enemy lines.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Oct 15, 43

I made a big mistake today. For the past a few days I kept pounding Kusaie Island with my 4E/2E bombers, and there were always over 100 fighters to sweep the base first. However, I turned down the fighters to give them a break but I forget to turn down the 4E bombers. And today, KB pop up at Kusaie and provided CAP for the base.

And this leads to the lost of over 100 4E bombers. About a quarter of the current Allies' 4E bombers. It is really an unacceptable lost and may interrupt my next a few months plans...

Ouch! on the HB losses! This kind of omission usually happens when players are tired or in a hurry. It hurts knowing the loss was due to a mistake rather than a calculated risk that didn't work out.

At Portland Roads, you were beginning to get the upper hand before the new IJA division showed up. You were destroying more of his squads than he was destroying yours. That only changed with the new division. Cut him off from air/sea supply and bomb/bombard until you can have at him again.

CL Ninaru?? Never saw that name before, even in other Scenario 2 AARs. Is it an Agano class?
