Hi everyone, i just got the game with all expansions, i looke through the 'letz play distant worlds' viedos on youtube wich helped me alot in understanding the basics.
I enjoy the game alot already, some things still confuse me though.

1. The military role of my ships doesnt affect the maximum szise, so what are Cruisers Destroyers, capital ship roles for?, i noticed that Cruisers dont get their name from the design witch i find confusing since i can nolonger tell the designs apart from just looking at the name of the ship

2. I can design frighters but havenot found a way to build them yet, are they just beeing built by the private sector?
iam asking becouse i wanted to have more frighters since my caslon was pileing up in my HW and on an other world wich was used for refuleing alot, it i was lacking

font szises are really hurting my eyes after some time on my screens natural resolution of 1920x1200,
so iam turning my desktop res down to 1680x1050, how are u guys experiencing that?

thats it for now, i like the game alot and will be back for some more questions soon i think :)

greetings

Welcome aboard,

I know you will be pleased with the game and the forum community... I know I have been! First and foremost don't get frustrated! There is alot to this game both above and under the hood! Take it a little bit at a time and read the AAR's... they realy help out.

There are others much more capable of answering your questions but for a quick response to your post:

1. The ship designations are primarily to assign roles or tasks wit escorts and frigates being short ranged home and colony defense. Your destroyers, cruisers and capital ships will make up your main battle fleets. As far as quick recognition I agree. The default class names are not always as intutive as you would like. I desgin my own destoryers, Cruisers and Capital ships and give them simple and recognizable names. DD, DDG for destroyer and missile destroyer are examples.

2. Frighters can be designed but keeping up with tech changes can be a pain in the butt. I let they AI handle the civilian stuff and even escorts and frigates. Remember though that you can design them but you can't order their construction. If your industry needs more shipping then the only way can realy effect the amount of ships built is to provide more money to the civilian sector (reduce colony taxes) and cut back on the number of state projects (military ships, etc.)

The font thing is a point of contention for several of us and has a thread associated with it.

Hope that helps and have fun!! We sure are!

tnx for ur answers Masterchief

putting more money in the private sector by reducing taxes is a very nice thing, i wasnt aware of that mechanic but it sounds extremely interesting.
i would have to manual all the tax rates first though wich is another complex task i feel. once i understand how tax and happynes / effectivenes relate
i might try that. sounds fun

as for my first question

i do design warships myself (wich is a ton of fun and one of the main reason why i play this game) and i am aware that the roles reflect some basic tasks but it doesnot seem to matter to me becouse if i choose for example destroyer as Military role, i still can fit in exactly the same stuff as i could fit in a design with military role: cruiser

the only difference that i can see is that a design with role tag: destroyer will get names according to the design name for example:i name my Destroyer design: Ion Class; the ships build of that design will get names: Ion Class01, Ion Class02 . . and so on
if i take the exact same design, and asign military role: cruiser the ships build of that design will get names: random cool sounding ship names that never mention Ion Class in it

anyways iam looking forward to exploring the dephts of this awesome game.
its truely the only massive empire building space 4x game that can hold up.
and i love the ship's artworks and general 2D aproach, it has a distinct MOO2 feel and allows for massive diversity when it comes to the ammount diffrent looking ships to choose from, i lvoe that

cheers
