On total research potential

Another quick question.

On the research screen it lists the total research potential for your empire ... but the manual isnt really clear on that. Is that total potential per category or all categories combined.

ie if the total potential is 600 is that 200 for per category or 600 per category?

That's for all categories combined, but keep in mind that there are also bonuses that can raise the actual research output above the normal maximum.

In the previous versions it was total, but now it is per category, IMHO. I'm not sure, but it looks like that.

Yeah, it's total combined. If you have 600K potential and the same number of each research module( so your total research capacity in each of the three fields is at a 1:1:1 ratio), you'll get 200K to each one. Then comes the bonuses on top of that. That's how I've treated it anyway.

As you can see, the Bonuses are EVERYTHING in this game. Well, they are a huge huge factor in your success at this game.

That is why the three Research Wonders under High Tech are my top priorities in the Research tree at the beginning of the game. I put the majority of my research into High Tech (1:2:4) in order to get those three Wonders. Then when I have them, I redo my ratios between the three techs to more of a 1:3:2 approach (Weapons getting the least of my Research). That's just me.., I love this freaking gamel.., I mean really love it!!!!
