Hey guys... I've been playing Galactic Civilisations for like nearly 9 years now on and off, and recently it was released on steam again, so after playing it a bit I decided to have a look around and see what else is about in the Space Civilisation genre.

I found a website called http://www.spacesector.com/ and from there found Armada 2526 and Distant Worlds. I originally ruled out Distant Worlds as it is real time and I much prefer turn based, but then I read that you can pause it, so that seamed ok.

Anyway... I obviously ended up getting Distant Words, the YouTube chan with some of the demo vids looked cool and the one on "Exploration" really impressed me. I always like to play in GC2 on immense universe (and other settings) designed to make the universe seam more "real" as in huge and awesome, leading to epic games of coolness... and the "Exploration" vid was like.. wow... finally.. this game is on a awesome scale from the start!

Well it is downloading now, I'll run the tutorials and stuff (if there are any) and prob meet you back here for some tips and pointers after my first time my race gets enslaved by some machine race to be used as a cheap form of joint lubricant.

Catch ya soon...

Welcome.  It's best space game I've played and I'm not a space game fan so that says something.
Don't worry about real time.  At normal speed, the game crawls.  Which is good.  You can then reduce it to 1/2 if it gets frantic or pause to look around and give orders.

I hate real-time games too, but DW is a different sort of beast. I prefer to think of it as "continuous time" instead. Real-time to me implies I should be clicking away as fast as possible, and the faster I click the better I do. DW is far more cerebral. Hope you enjoy it!

GC is a GREAT game. This is much much better. I think of this as sort of the CIV 4 (not 5, 5 sucks) of Outer Space, but more complicated.

But there is something you need to know. In GC, to me, everything you need to know is either in the manual or is somewhat intuitive. In Legends, (1) the Manual is good, but not even close to being comprehensive, and (2) most of this is NOT intuitive. You have to read the forums and this forum is packed with mega minds.

The learning curve and frustration the first 16-30 hours is huge.., fight through it.

This game is awesome and the developer (Eliotg) supports this game super-humanly. Another sure sign this is a winner is -- I am not sure if you are new to Matrix, but look at the number of posts under Legends.., that is a sure sign that tons of us think this game kicks major butt.

If you are still with me, do yourself a favor, as soon as you can, start Designing your own ships. Lots of smart veterans let the AI do it, but please make your own Designs. Sure, it sucks the life out of you taking the time to do this, but holy crap, it is the major fun portion of this incredibly awesome game.

Hang in there, it gets better. New Patch should make the Ship Design a little less time consuming. This is too complicated to explain to you at this point, but trust me, this awesome game is just going to get awesomer.

Oh I am one of those players that names every planet and colony individually. Also if there is a way I normal like to make a custom race of my own rather than use the pre-built... so yea.. making my own ships is defiantly going to happen.

Welcome to the fun-house! I like GalCiv too, and in general I'm more of a turn-based fan. But DW "feels" like a turn-based game in a lot of ways. I certainly spend a lot of time with the game paused. :)

With vanilla DW, I sometimes felt like the game was playing itself, but once I put everything on manual and slowed it down, I realized there is a ton for the player to decide (if the player wishes to be in control). And Legends has really made the game engine shine. I really thinks this game tells a great story about a living, breathing galaxy.

Welcome! I burned out on GalCiv2 for some reason, I can't play it anymore. DW-Legends blows it away though anyway. It is so much more immersive.

Welcome, VGD. Beginners tip; make good use of automation at first and slowly wean yourself off it. Take control of more things as you learn.
