Eyebrow on the Money witpqs (A) vs vicberg (J) {No vicberg}

1941 December 6

"Sir, we've confirmed it!"

>"Confirmed what?"

"The attack, sir. It's imminent."

>"The whole world knows that. But where?"

"Pearl Harbor, sir."

>"Huh? Just how have you confirmed this?"

"We decrypted this routine looking banking message."

>"Banking message? Are you kidding me?"

"No sir! It looks like a banking message but it was transmitted over Japan's Imperial Navy radio network. That means the banking stuff was baloney to throw us off the trail!"

>"Oh. If it was over the navy radio net, was it in the Imperial Navy's code?"

"Yes sir."

>"Can we read that now?"

"No sir. That's why we used Google Decrypt."

>"G... Goo... WHAT!?"

"Google Decrypt sir. It's software"

>"Is this some kind of a joke?"

"No sir!

>"So how does lingerie help read codes?"

"No, no! Software isn't clothing sir. It's very specific mathematical logic based on computational..."

>"Whoa! Skip that part!"

"Yes, sir. Here is the original intercept. I'm afraid the intercept station operators couldn't make out the station call sign. That happens sometimes." Hands a typed sheet to CincAE. It reads:
Hello, i am seek for your assist, support on this claim, my name is John Great, our late client Dr. Kenneth Adams died on painful motor together with his family, wife and with 2 sons on 12th June 2007 here in africa and before the death of Dr.Kenneth Adams leaving the sum of Eleven million Euros with the Security Company here Lome-Togo and i am senior head manager which I discovered original copy of certificate issued after the money was deposited by Dr. Kenneth Adams on his file with the company. Please I apply for your help on the collect/claim of this deposit I will give you more details when I get your assurance and willingness to help. I will come over to your country immediately the successful conclusion of the collection and invest my % on a good profitable project. 35% for you and for your time. Please get back to me as quick as possible; please keep this strictly confidential due eyebrow on the money. Please confirm your reply to this private email: {Call Sign Unintelligible} Thanks John Great.

>"Holy smokes, how do you make sense of that?"

"We got a partial decrypt sir. See the part about keeping this confidential? "eyebrow" means attack and "money" means the target. Up here "painful motor" means aircraft carriers, sir. And "Thanks John Great", well John Great must be their code for Pearl Harbor, and Thanks means to execute the attack, and..."

>"Wait a minute! You said "must be their code for Pearl Harbor? It doesn't decrypt that way?"

"Well, it's a very early version of the software, sir. You know that even with modern methods we get a little here and there. With this future stuff..."

>"Huh?"

"I mean that this new tool is in the very early stages. You might even say pre-embryonic. But we're very certain of this sir. It happened that way before."

>"What!? What!? Sergey, I know they say you're some kind of genius from the future, but don't get carried away, OK?"

"Yes, sir."

>"So you show up, supposedly dropped out of some weird tornado or something, and Washington sends you out here to take over SigInt because they can't figure out what to do with you. Fine. You took a knock on the head and it made you a genius. But are you certain of this? An attack on Pearl Harbor is imminent?"

"Yes sir! Absolutely!"

It's deja vu all over again. vicberg and I are embarking on a new venture, and thanks to Vic's understanding and kindness, we are using the same set up, scenario, HRs, etc. etc. as in my game just begun with Andav (the Devious Admiral Wa). This AAR is open to Vic and Andav until I post for December 7th, at which time I will change the title to close it. The games are just too close in time otherwise, 'cause I only get so many good ideas at a time and I'll need some of them in both games!

As time goes by the games will obviously diverge and probably prgress at different rates. In the very early going I am going to try and pace things so that the game with Andav (which began first) is about a week ahead of this game. That's my likely futile attempt to keep my head from exploding due to trying to move ships in the wrong game and so on.

The rest of this post is almost identical to the similar part of the opening post in the other game.

The field of battle is Da Babes Scenario 28-C, Extended Map, Stacking Limits, beginning with Beta 1008r3 and progressing from there. Our house rules, et al:
- Ignore point totals - you decide your own victory conditions and me likewise. At the end maybe we both consider we 'won' or 'lost'!

========================================================

*** House Rules ***

General:

- Respect boundaries and pay PP's on units belonging to restricted commands as appropriate (pay full PP for all such units). Exceptions:
* Restricted units can go up to 3 hexes outside their border without paying PP.
* US and Canadian units can cross their borders without paying PP in the event of invasion.
* Units restricted to Manchuria/Manchukuo can invade Soviet Union without paying PP.

First Turn Restrictions:

Japan:
- Multiple Port Attacks restricted to areas with somewhat close sunrise times (i.e. no port attacks many time zones apart).

Allies:
- No new TF's formed.

- Orders may be given to TF's already formed.

- Ground units everywhere may be given orders regarding Replacements (on/off), Operations Mode, Targets, etc. but no movement orders.

- Air units everywhere may be given orders regarding Replacements (accept/not), Pilots, and Limited Mission Orders, etc. but no Transfers. Limited Mission orders means that current mission orders may be tailored (change altitude, etc.), but no groups may be given attack orders. In other words, only groups already with attack orders at scenario start may have attack orders.

- China, no restrictions (exempted from all first turn restrictions). China excludes Hong Kong.

Clarifications:

- Invasions are allowed at non-base/non-dot hexes.

'No gaminess' and 'be realistic'.

The Imperial Leader might grace this ARR before the December 7th post. Treat him harshly! [:D]

We're looking forward to seeing how the new stacking limits work out, plus so many other improvements in Babes over the months. We began with the newest version with the devices updated for new bomb devices calculations.

Be sure to participate as you like. [:)] I intend to try the same style as my previous AARs, namely an accounting of what's going on, some planning info (not all - the audience needs surprises!), and a screen shot with almost every post. Combat report excerpts only (and only when relevant).

Wish us luck! [8D]

Sergey was wrong, and for now he's been tasked with watching the horizon around Pearl Harbor, with strict orders to report any Japanese carrier planes he sees. In his place, the Intel Monkeys are back.

SVC - Supreme Vic Command - went with his trademark Far East opening. In contrast to earlier 12/7 attacks the KB was tasked with smashing Singapore (which they did) while LBA pounded Manila. As a result, the sub fleet in Manila is in much better shape than it might have been. Singapore has port damage 49 while Manila has port damage 5. The airfields were untouched, but Clark and Georgetown airfields were hit hard. Cagayan, the B-17 base on Mindanao, was bombarded from the sea, but mercifully the airfield was missed.

Batan Island was lost, and Kota Bharu was also invaded. No landings on Luzon, and there are not seen any convoys clearly headed for Luzon. KB is ~120nm SE Kota Bharu/~120nm NE Kuantan. It seems that SVC intends to go for deep invasions to cut off the Philippines and pierce the eastern DEI, while preventing any build up of defenses at Palembang.

Midget subs did attack shipping in Pearl Harbor and hit West Virginia hard. Here is an accounting of all ships sunk and all ships damaged. This is from Tracker, so ships currently damaged but uninvolved in combat are included.

Here are the locations of KB and an sKB. You can see the major exit routes are designed to escape with as much as possible by outrunning the hunters or saturating them. Any surface forces that pursue to the east will also burn as much fuel as we can make them.

There is only one HDML left in Singapore, and no ships at all in Manila. A number of vessels that sortied from Singapore sank, some from torpedoes or gunfire of I-boats and a number from mortal 800kg AP hits at anchor the day before. Amphibious operations occurred at
Kota Bharu
Wenchow
Aparri

The Empire captured
Kota Bharu

The landing at Wenchow encountered a game-glitch as only part of the unit loaded and so only a small fragment landed there. I won't attack it.

DM Thracian carried out the first deep penetration raid of the war by laying a minefield at Pescadores and blasted AG Chiyo Maru (Shell hits 15, heavy fires, heavy damage). Thracian herself did not escape enemy waters, nor did DD Thanet. DD Scout is nearly out of fuel close to an sKB and will try to quietly slip into port to top up and make an escape. xAK Teihoku Maru is likely sunk by a Dutch sub.

Air losses over Singapore and Luzon were frightful. KB made sweeps over Singapore while equally concentrated and devastating sweeps bloodied the skies over Luzon. I've ordered all air units pulled out of Singapore. Java will offer a better chance to do some damage with its more numerous airfields. Here is a look at the day's ship losses and air losses. At the bottom is the current position of KB. Where will the beast go? Has SVC ordered a quick sweep through the Java Sea before the even meager defenses are ready?

KB did not raid the Java Sea, but a powerful cruiser task force did pound Singkawang. Amphibious operations took place at
Aparri
Wenchow
Laoag
Singkawang

The Empire captured
Itbayat Island
Aparri

Imperial surface groups intercepted shipping escaping Hong Kong. Of more concern is the group built around CL Nagara (+~6 DDs) that found ships near Cagayan and points east. EHQ might have noted the Manila Refugees fleeing eastward. I-boats took more of the Singapore refugees, but at least one shark is thought to have run out of ammo. At GR88,50 (near Hwainan) the 48th Chinese Corps got the better of the IJA 138th Infantry Regiment.
Japanese Shock attack

Allied ground losses:
17 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

It's always nice to see an enemy unit rendered hors de combat. USMC Regiments are prepping for Maleolap and Wotje. We might not get the chance to send them, but if the bulk of the IJN is still busy when we are ready the objective will be to smash the Mandates.

Here is a look at KB covering the Singkawang invasion. A foray into the Java Sea is still a possibility. Note the mid-ocean minefields already in place. Additional loaded mine layers are ready to make night runs in front of KB if it does transit the Java Sea.

found and destroyed several of the Manila refugees seeking escape through the Philippine Sea. These were the lower value ships sent on the most likely route. Higher value ships are taking a somewhat more northerly course. Tankers are already en route to possible refueling points to allow USN carrier TFs to provide escort to any escapees that get far enough. All ships are traveling independently. Some ships disengaged while still afloat, including two USN WWI DDs. Special mention of Pillsbury's performance, as she hit 2 x CAs and 1 x DD before taking a large caliber hit and making her escape.

A strong Zero sweep of Rangoon tore through the defending Buffaloes and littered the countryside with their remains.

Palembang invasion is imminent. Mindanao will probably fall quickly as it is squeezed from north and south. Recon of Bangkok shows about 36 fighters and 75 bombers.

The Empire captured:
Hwaiyin
Cagayan
Digos
Dadjangas
Atimonan

There were amphibious operations at:
Cagayan
Digos
Dadjangas
Wenchow
Guam
Palembang

Engagements of refugees in the Philippine Sea continued, now prosecuted by surface force, carrier force, and land based air. I-boats were active in the DEI. IJA forces are pressing on Wuchow, catching and smashing a Chinese unit before it could make the relative safety of the fortified city. Two AMC raiders found and sank an xAK at GR150,154 NE of Savii. Newly designated Force K, built of Leander, Achilles, and Le Triomphant, will sprint and shortly be on station to protect the vital re-supply of Pago Pago.

Recon show 63 auxiliary class planes at Bankok. Since the fix of this display in the recent Betas (previously fighters were being extra-counted as auxiliaries), I presume this means a large number of transport planes are present, probably to support an airborne invasion. I consider Port Blair to be the most likely target. Victoria Point is less likely, as are various points in Burma.

Overall, I judge India to be under the greatest threat. As the USA fighters in the Philippines are still fairly intact, I am pulling them out. The P-40E squadrons have ferried to Kweilin in China and will move on to India. The P-35A squadron will do the same tomorrow when PPs allow. The P-40B group and the HQ mini-squadron (also P-40B) will move to Australia and likely be shipped to India. The B-17s from the Philippines have already moved into or toward India. Some of the British/Australian/New Zealand air units have moved to India (or still in transit) but others are deployed throughout the DEI and will likely only be able to escape to Australia.

Here is an overview map with some key naval forces identified. Notice the total lack of enemy activity along the northern coast of New Guinea and points east of there. Undoubtedly that will change as the DEI is conquered, but it puts the Allies in a position where reinforcing those areas is easy while reinforcing India is already difficult in terms of forces currently in the DEI. Land units at Singapore are essentially trapped except for the prospect of cadres being evacuated, certainly no combat capable units can be extracted. With KB already in the area to lend its air power, it is uncertain if Java can be held long enough even for the scratch USA fighter and dive bomber squadrons to arrive, train well enough to land on purpose, and then deploy.

KB has transited the Sunda Strait into the Indian Ocean! A risky move, banking on either the Allies not having mined the strait or the KB's ships' abilities to avoid any minefields. The only refugees spotted so far by this maneuver are four xAKL towing dry docks Tandjon Kv-1 and -2. Allied aircraft made numerous attacks on the Imperial convoys and TFs at Merak, but despite heavy losses only managed to torpedo xAK Kaiko Maru, causing heavy damage and minor ground casualties.

Chinese corps were punished near Hawinan and Chengchow, the 8th New Chinese Corps was destroyed utterly while the 48th Chinese Corps retreated with heavy casualties.

Fewer refugees were brought down in the Philippine Sea today, but three mine sweepers were dispatched by a surface group of 4 x BB, 5 x CL, and 4 x DD. Lexington is getting into waters where she might be spotted. An extra complement of Marine fighters is on board from Wake, but her main fighters are Buffaloes, hardly confidence inspiring.

Nice maps, my Argletonian colleague. Too bad you're fighting for the wrong side!

Did you want to mention those hordes of Japanese troops ashore at Batavia? Seems like that may be important for your consideration in your 'fortress Java' plans? [;)]

That would be "Merak", my fine feathered friend! Duly noted as the site of far too many failed Allied air attacks. There are additional Dutch forces rushing to aid Batavia's defense, but Java simply has too few troops almost all trained to too low a standard to hold much hope. I find solace in thinking about "Fortress Salt Lake City"...

The rapid pace of invasions continues. KB is still in the Indian Ocean, drifting along the coast of Java as her fighters cover the Merak invasion. Today heavy attacks against those intruders scored no hits at all, even though CAP was penetrated for many bomb and torpedo runs. Clearly our fliers and planes are not up to the task.A sweep of Rangoon treated a squadron of the AVG just as roughly as the British flying Buffaloes had been treated.

It seems the movement of USN carriers across the Pacific was unexpected by SVC. Lexington aerial warriors made their presence known when juicy targets came into range.
Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Chichi-jima at 117,73

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid spotted at 13 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 4 minutes

Allied aircraft
F2A-3 Buffalo x 11
SBD-3 Dauntless x 9

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AMC Saigon Maru, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Hakaze
xAP Baikal Maru, Bomb hits 1

Japanese ground losses:
57 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 3 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x SBD-3 Dauntless releasing from 4000'
Naval Attack: 1 x 1000 lb SAP Bomb

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring AMC Saigon Maru
Scouting reports at least 3 x DD and 2 x xAP present, so the convoy is probably much larger than the group of ships attacked under heavy cloud cover.

KB is remaining focused on supporting invasion and is not hunting down refugees.

The Empire captured:
Baler

There were no amphibious operations.

Batavia received port, airfield, and sweep attacks by LBA and the KB. Chinese pulling out of Chengchow withstood a river-crossing shock attack that hopefully will give them time to finish their withdrawal. At Wenchow a shock attack by a greatly more numerous IJA was soundly repulsed, although it did reduce the fortifications and was close to dislodging the defenders.

KB found a couple of victims in the Banda Sea, as did an I-boat south of Timor. Otherwise there was the continued domination of the skies by the Empire, pounding ground troops where they pleased and downing Allied fighters wherever they encountered them. One or more IJA units are seen leaving Wenchow to the east, the direction in which reinforcements to the invasion arrived overland. These reports began yesterday after the stiff rebuff, so there are probably one or more units pulling out to R&R.

KB is heading east and might now be actively hunting.

1941 December 17

The Empire captured:
Bayombong

There were no amphibious operations.

Today was a rare day of unbridled good news for the Allies, meager though it was. The only significant engagements were sub KX torpedoing xAKL Kiko Maru for heavy fires and heavy damage, and an opportunistic attack against a lone IJA unit guarding the forest across the river from Ichang.
Ground combat at 84,48 (near Ichang)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 73717 troops, 387 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1924

Defending force 7931 troops, 78 guns, 12 vehicles, Assault Value = 104

Allied adjusted assault: 900

Japanese adjusted defense: 125

Allied assault odds: 7 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+), disruption(-)

Japanese ground losses:
2599 casualties reported
Squads: 128 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 67 destroyed, 5 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 4 disabled
Guns lost 17 (8 destroyed, 9 disabled)
Vehicles lost 2 (2 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units retreated 1

Allied ground losses:
942 casualties reported
Squads: 5 destroyed, 102 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 9 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Guns lost 6 (1 destroyed, 5 disabled)

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
32nd Chinese Corps
75th Chinese Corps
2nd Chinese Corps
59th Chinese Corps
45th Chinese Corps
68th Chinese Corps
67th Chinese Corps
94th Chinese Corps

Defending units:
34th Division
Air attacks by the IJA were too little to rescue the 34th Division from the advancing Allied horde. Here is an overview map. Notice the KB alone in the Banda Sea.

Interesting! So what's your assessment of his choice to send KB to Singapore instead of Pearl or Manila? Seems like he'd have gotten more warships at Pearl or, as you said, more subs at Manila. Playing as Japan, those subs annoy me more than anything else in the early going. Even if they fire lots of duds, they're still scary.

It's beyond scary .. imagine all the "free cards" the Allies have each and every torp that goes out and hit .. sure "Hit no explosion .. Hit no explosio"n then Boom .. every single torp is 4:1 against, but again it is a free card because you do not expect anything to happen. In my game I defied the odds sinking 10 xAK/XAP's full of troops with 21" USN torps ..not counting the contributions of the Dutch ..

The IJ might have a plan to take out Singapore early .. I mean for the effort the USN are a coming anyway in '44 and some old battleships are not going to make a difference but speed of conquoring malay and then Festung Sumatra might be worth the KB's effort ..
