When I designed a new ship, it eliminated the previous design in that role.

How do I design a new role?

Also how do I get back my old design?

Thanks.

Your old design isn't gone. It's just that the design list defaults to "Show Latest Design." If you set the list to "Show All Designs," you'll see older ones again.

Your old design is listed under Show Non Obsolete Designs

Why do you want 2 ships for the same role ? Don't you want the best ship for this role ? The AI will allways favour the lastest design to build.

Don't forget at DW Escort or Capital isn't a shipsize it is a role what the AI should do with the ship when its is automated.

I had a related question. I wanted to copy an existing design and then modify it. But when I chose the "copy" option, the new design was called "Copy of x", and I couldn't figure out how to change that title. Er, maybe I saved it before I tried changing the name, and now I'm stuck with that name?

Role play purposes would be one reason for multiple ships of each role.

For example: Maybe I want an escort 'gunboat' with all lasers, but also an escort 'PTM' with light beam weapons but a heavy missile battery. Does it change how the game plays? No, not at all, but it allows me to have a little RP fun.

That is pretty apparent once you open the design. You can change the name. As long as no ship uses the design, of course.

You are only stuck if you have ordered a ship using the design.

What you can do to unstuck the misnamed class is to copy as new again and change only the name then resave. It won't change the class name of ships already built but it will change those from now on.

But the one or two stuck with the 'Copy of X' name can then be retrofitted to the newer non- 'Copy of X' named ship.

Ah, yes, didn't think of that. And it won't cost you anything and will take very little construction yard time. Nice.
