I am not sure if we have a kamikaze captain or a Samurai with nothing but his honour to lose, but this action definitely deserves the Japanese equivalent of the British Victoria Cross.

I guess the captain and his crew got a critical succeed on the "Banzai!" skill check [:D]

Read the next posting as well. There you see visibility at 12,000 and the forces evading at 22,000 Yards.

This game is being played using version 1108r3.

Another thing to consider though is at this point forces have already been spotted and are withdrawing.

Visibility conditions change dramatically when; 1: you know where to look. 2: guns are popping everywhere and 3: star shells are 'posted'.

I am guessing here of course, but the game engine must have some solid reason for this strange looking behaviour.

Every now and then you get a Merchie ship crewed by samurai. In my current PBeM an allied sub surfaced to beat on a merchie and as soon as the sub surfaced the merchie pounded on the sub until it fled without the merchie suffering a single hit. I was expecting to see a burning hulk of a merchie and was very happily surprised...

Well now I can only report what I read.

I now understand Apollo's earlier posting.

Does anybody known the significance of the asterisk following the range in the image above?

If anybody is interested in investigating this anomaly further I will send you the save file.

You will need to PM my opponent Mundy for his password though. Alternatively maybe michaelm could generate the reports for you.

IIRC the asterisk means it is a dual-purpose gun - capable of both anti-surface and anti-air fire.

Perhaps the sighting visibility , range of guns and engagement distance shown should be logged in the forum as potential bug(s) or is it just FOW.

I can be persuaded to believe that the merchant crew allowed their enthusiasm to convince them to fire at a target beyond their range. It is possible that once a target has been sighted within max visual range it is easier to track beyond that range...

There is no problem. When two ships are picked to engage each other, one is randomly picked to shoot first. That one is also listed as "engages" t'other. Both ships get a chance to fire - even if no weapon turns out to have the range.

Maybe they thought they were gonna give 'em hell with those TWO machine guns?

No, for a long time some of us have had problems with a surface force failing to track down and kill slow moving, feeble-armed merchies, etc..

Might just be one of those things that cannot be corrected..The rest of the game is so magnificent that things like this may not matter so much to some folks?

TFs react based on their primary missions. Carrier TFs never go looking for surface engagements.
