Yep seen it a few hundred times... but it still takes my breath away. First of all because even though it is now common footage, it is rear in it's content, and second because it is a AFB's battleship. [;)]

When you see the Arizona explode in that particular film clip you don't see any of the crew. In this one you can see the guys going over the side near the bow and jumping into the sea. Brings the 859 lives lost more into focus.

There appear to be a few men still alive a on the bow even after the explosion. I wonder if their fate has ever been made public.

Indeed so. A very sad piece of WWII footage.

Wiki gives her a crew of 1100+ and 860 died in the sinking. The video is from some 4 minutes after the torpedoing, so there hasn't been much if any time for any crewmembers to get far away from the ship. I guess that means that some of the men in the video managed to survive. If it's the aft magazines that blew up, it's likely that on the bow was one of the safer placec to be.

Yes... that was one of the most gut wrenching scenes from WWII... quite horrible... all those sailors trying to walk the side and the bottom of the ship while she is turning and then tremendous explosion...

Hi all,

BTW, one other very famous footage used in many many documentaries (and many times used in WWII documentaries [8|])...

Austro-Hungarian Battleship Szent Istvan sinking in WWI after being torpedoed:

P.S.
I don't understand why they trained the gun turrets towards the side in attempt to stabilize the ship after torpedo hit - aren't the big gun turrets in perfect balance so that the ship is not affected when they turn in combat? [;)]

the mounts themselves are balanced....but there's still a shift in weight due to the heavy gun barrells themselves.

Hi all,

But shouldn't the barrels be balanced with the heavy breach inside turret and rear end of turret itself?

Yes....assuming the ship's center of gravity is the norm. An extreme list though can throw things off. It also depends on how precisely the turrets were "balanced". It may be that there was a small shift in weight under normal conditions such that the ship would not substantially list to one side or the other. It was a desperation move to be sure to try to check the list somewhat. Every little pound helps

They should have trained the turrets to the other side and fire.[:D]
