Here's a bit more info and an interesting spin on the story - a WWI Australian sub was lost in those waters and never located.

what I did was type "new guinea submarine" into Google and the entire story came up, without the request for subscription...

Probably a big esky (Chilly Bin) of beer and they want to keep it for themselves.

There must be a lot of wrekage down there, would take a bit to identify it.
