Steamboateng, thanks for trying to explain it to me, but all you've done is add in some Swahili to the previous mix of Norse, Arapaho and Aramaic. What the heck is a data set?

P.S. No need to explain. As you can see, I'm illiterate in these matters and trying to educate me would just take time on your part, and I guarantee you that you can better use that time.

No, no, no...don't stop Steamboateng! I for one very much enjoy and appreciate all of Canoerebel's flailings at modernity. It's good reading.

Like most of you, I've never met my opponents. I don't know what they look like, I really don't know anything about their private lives, but I do kind of form a mental image over time, kind of how a listener might form a mental image of a disc jockey they've heard for years but have never seen.

Well, I've been playing my current opponent, Chez da Jez, who is also called Chaz on occasion, for most of this year. I've never seen him and don't know very much about him. But I've formed this mental image of a man of impeccable taste and rugged good looks. He is a cross between Stone Phillips, Cary Grant, and Mattew McCanaughy. He's the intellectual equivalent of the love child of Albert Einstein and Natalie Portman. He has more integrity and credibility than Daniel Webster and Walter Cronkite.

I was wrong. So wrong.

When I logged onto the Internet this morning, there was a news item about my opponent. To say the least, I am shocked. Here's the text of the "headline":
"Chaz Skewered by Ex-'Dancing' Star." Here's the photo attached to that story:

Oh my gawd! I was flabbergasted when I read this. At first I thought you had pegged me correctly then as I read on and finally saw the picture, I realized you had confused me for someone else. My true persona was captured quite well when I posed for a magazine article a few years back. I'll see if I can't find it...... ah, there it is! I'll post it below.

Not that there's anything wrong with that!

And I do know what you mean about forming a mental image of your opponent as the game progresses and you get to know him better. I've done the same with Dan.

Canoerebel (Dan) always struck as one of those men who eschew the modern conveniences of man in return for a simpler, less complicated life... the type of man who prefers pulltops to twist tabs, the type of man who doesn't need a map or GPS to navigate from point a to b.... someone like the man in the picture...

Chez

Spent the last week in Disneyworld with the kids. Thought of Dan during the Country Bear Jamboree! He was the jug player.

P.S. I should also note that a quick Internet search showed me that the Bikini Team was an Old Milwaukee, not Budweiser, advertising campaign.

This is what I saw when I logged onto America Online this past Saturday. The resemblance to Nemo's avatar [pasted in the background behind the AOL screen] was rather striking.

I had to redact part of the headline associated with the illustration, because it dealt with a serious issue not appropriate to light-hearted fun like this.

Dan - you play 3D Pinball? How, um, quaint...

BTW - you know that because you posted your screen with AOL up we can trace that to where you live using the traceroute command in DOS - right?

Just kidding - lol.

*sigh* Yeah, Anonymous' use of the V for Vendetta Guy Fawkes mask is a bit of a PITA alright.

I chose it because I like V for Vendetta and its message of the necessity for us all to stand up for what we believe lest we find ourselves stampeded into actions and behaviours motivated by fear and our worst prejudices. I think its a very powerful movie which speaks to the nature of power, responsibility and the fact that when push comes to shove only you can give away your personal integrity. They might kill you but they can't take away your personal integrity ( that one last inch of the movie - 2nd quote below). Of course, its also, at another level a movie about a guy in a mask who likes V-based assonance and seeking vengeance. However it recognises that personal vengeance is hollow while inspiring change is worth something.

Here's a few quotes which I think are really inspiring from the movie:
quote:

Interrogator: I am instructed to inform you that you have been convicted by special tribunal and that unless you are ready to offer your cooperation you are to be executed. Do you understand what I'm telling you?
Evey Hammond: Yes.
Interrogator: Are you ready to cooperate?
Evey Hammond: No.
Interrogator: Very well. Escort Ms. Hammond back to her cell. Arrange a detail of six men and take her out behind the chemical shed and shoot her.
Guard: It's time.
Evey Hammond: I'm ready.
Guard: Look all they want is one little piece of information, just give them something, anything.
Evey Hammond: Thank you, but I'd rather die behind the chemical sheds.
Guard: Then you have no fear any more. You're completely free.

quote:

Valerie: It seems strange that my life should end in such a terrible place, but for three years I had roses and apologized to no one. I shall die here. Every inch of me shall perish. Every inch, but one. An inch. It is small and it is fragile and it is the only thing in the world worth having. We must never lose it or give it away. We must NEVER let them take it from us.

IT here referring to personal integrity and being true to oneself etc...

quote:

Valerie: I remember how the meaning of words began to change. How unfamiliar words like "collateral" and "rendition" became frightening... I remember how "different" became dangerous.

quote:

V: But again, truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty you need only look into a mirror.

On why bigotry, prejudice and excoriation were allowed to become commonplace by society in return for the ephemeral promise of security. Security gained by identifying, ostracising and finally eradicating the other - as 1930s Germany went so can any society go.

Of course, now, that mask is associated with a neo-anarchist agenda and viewed through that prism. Its a pity cause I don't even agree with those Occupy Wall Street types. . With that said I may well be wearing my Guy Fawkes mask for Oiche Shamhna in a few days time.

I've never seen or heard of the movie. I had never seen your avatar guy until you began using it as an avatar. So when it started popping up on AOL and news websites, I immediately thought of you.

Aye, I can see how that would happen.

You might want to check out the movie. It certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea but it has Natalia Portman in it so even if you can't stand the movie there's something worth watching

The movie is pretty interesting, though it felt a little heavy handed in places for my tastes. I'm personally not much in the market for trading freedom and personal responsibility for the (in my mind completely imaginary) promise of security. I completely understand the desire for some type of security in a world which denies it if you look with open eyes, but no concept of a precariat can convince me that people won't trade far too dearly in the long term to feel safe or secure or as if the world will be a kind place in the long term.

That said, the world does need a few anarchists to not live by the social construct to show that it is a construct, but it also needs people who advocate for stability in an unstable world and it needs people who advocate for change of any kind in a world that likes to become stagnant. All have their flaws and will cause plenty of misery pushed too far, but imo society needs all these impulses to keep it even remotely balanced.

That said, here's a picture of my current opponent (the ai).

Well said Schlemiel.

Weirdly enough I'm one of the few people on the forum who knows exactly what one of his current opponents looks like cause a pic was recently posted of him. It was actually pretty close to what I'd imagined - three eyes, goggle-eyed stare, excessively heterosexuality-affirming beard, super-tight top. You know, the usual

I thought it was a great movie! Off the wall? Yes! But it's message was plain.
Anarchy/................Anarchy/.............................WALL STREET IS ANARCHY! (And I should know 'cause I still hold 100 shares of Goldman Sachs, just for old time sake!)
I like the mask.........................actually, if you dump the avatar now, you be guilty of betraying the very reasons you chose it.

Many years ago, I once had a conversation with a prostitute in Chile. I was puzzled why the Chilean people seemed so content with Pinochet and his abuses of power. I, being somewhat of an idealist, said that it seemed to me that the disposed president Allende had so much more to offer the Chilean people. Her answer was simple enough. She said that under Allende everyone had personal freedoms that they had not seen in decades. But of course there was never any food on the table. Under Pinochet there was repression and less personal freedom but there was plenty of food. She told me that only a person who had never experienced real hunger could think that freedom was the most important thing in the world. It was indeed hard for me to relate, having always had plenty to eat.

Before or after the classic sigarette-after-sex ? Cause smoking right after sex is a sacred moment of celebration and it would be a shame to ruin it talking about serious stuff like hunger, geo-political assets, dictatorship and so on... don't you think?

Just kidding...i totally agree with your statement. It's easy to talk about democracy, revolutions and freedoms when you already have everything you need...
...but at the same time, panem et circenses is exactly how dictators keep peoples enslaved since the beginning of civilization...

The freaky thing about the movie - the first time I saw it, I was living in Larkhill on exchange duty!! Went looking for the chemical shed the next day. Good movie, but too much beer involved the first time I saw it so had to watch it again, or was it Natalie Portman?

The 42-year-old only child of Cher and Sonny Bono added, “You know, it just kind of shows why for me it’s important to be on the show, because so little still is known about what it means to be transgender.

“And there’s so many just completely inaccurate stereotypes and thoughts that people have.”

Bono, who was born Chastity Bono and underwent gender-reassignment surgery last year, ignited passions among Dancing With the Stars fans with the announcement that he’d be competing on the series.
