Attaching units using the OB panel - 10/19/2011 2:28:59 PM

Hi - and my apologies if this question is an old chestnut.

How do I attach units using the OB panels? Once the reinforcement units have spread out from their entry point I can attach directly - but when they are all jumbled up on top of one another it seems impossible.

I've tried Ctr+click on the units in the OB table - but this just seems to highlight the last unit clicked.

What am I doing wrong?

cheers

Rubber Sword--I am very new to this game but have discovered that this is feasible from your player OB----Ctrol click on each unit you want to detach from the reinforcing group and give an order eg Defend and click pt on map. They willl then detatch from that group
If you want to attach units to another HQ on the map---Ctrol click the units and the new HQ on the map and give an order ---they will then join the new HQ and that unit.
Hope this helps--if not--- or wait for an experienced forum member to clarify.
Cheers

Hi, and thanks for replying, however, what you suggest doesn't work.

Take the Tutorial scenario as an example; If you click on B bty 489 AAA and then on B Coy 35 Tank Bn, if you click on the units on the map, as described, they form a new unit that can be redirected, - but if you click on them in the OB panel only the last unit is given the order.

I'm sure I'm missing something very obvious but can't see it

OB tab mode? You can toggle it between the various modes - organic, current order group, player order group etc.

Not sure, as I seldom bother changing formations from their organic structures - it simplifies supply for one thing (I only need to assure a clear run to the unit's direct rear, and not potentially to a single unit on the far flank of my forces) - I can do this by moving the Regt base to the rear/rear flank of the supported group - scattered elements greatly confuse this routeing.

As tanks and infantry are performing different tasks usually (SBF, assault (or assault in open ground, assault in close terrain)) this is just as easily handled by positioning two formations to support by mutual presence as by tying them together as a single order group. Just IMO of course, and this might not be the design intent - but it is workable (both in the real world and within the context of the game engine). Not claiming it as being as effective, or the best method, just noting that there is more than one way to skin the cat.

RubberSword,

Welcome. The short answer is that you cannot select multiple units in the OB display. Hence you cannot form battlegroups using it. Yopu have to do so through the map interface. Yes it is a desireable thing to do and yes it is on the wish list.

Certainly, trying to select multiple units from the OB is very unreliable---it sometimes works with a few units but also seems to depend on the order in which you control/click them. Need to use the on-map method for this
But where the use of the OB for selection seems valuable to me is where you have, say, a confusing mass of reinforcement units at the map edge when you can use the OB to click on a particular brigade, battalion or company and give it a "move" order of some sort to detach it (and subsequently others) from the mass of units and progressively establish some order from a confusing map display.

You know you can filter by 'HQ' or by 'Base' or 'Bombard-Support' - Setting the 'big artillery' and Bases to one side with defend orders is useful - it prevents their inadvertent forward movement.

Next work through the HQs - you can start with Bn and work up, or start with the Army/Corps and work down.

Personally, I set OB to organic and then pick a Bn HQ, and using the arrow keys traverse across, across, across until all Bn for the Regt are done.
Next Up, give orders to the Regt Support group.

Across and down, gives you the first Bn of the next Regt, etc. Up to order the Regt, Across for any other Regts, Divisional Supports, Bn attached at Division etc.

Up again gives you the next Division.

This also works even with filter set to all, but you have to check that you aren't giving orders to subordinates by accident...

Once all units with HQ are done, you also need to check (using the OB) that useful line/line-support elements aren't 'stuck' unloved in a Support group, or HQ at high level... it can be useful to find a 'reserve HQ' somewhere and group some of these units into a fire-brigade. Remember, not everything has to be in the front lines, but it does help to know what reserves you have, so you can commit them early when they can do some good.

Lieste--I certainly see the value in the filtering method of clarifying the current condition ond role of all your units and where there may be a need to redirect orders --and I do make use of this at various stages.
But when I receive a sudden influx of reinforcements very close grouped together on the map I find it useful to use the OB to view the involved Divs, brigades, Battalions etc with their constituent units in one readable display so I can quickly decide which brigades or battalions and line support elements I want to move forward on which routes and which Div HQs, supply units and large arty units etc i want to leave in rear. I can then quickly implement these decisions via orders on OB.
As someone on this forum recently and very wisely observed "there are many ways of skinning a cat"---my cat is probably being rather inexpertly skinned but it suits me at this early moment----though probably doesnt please the cat so much--------
Thanks again for your help and patience!.............
