I am currently playing Japan against the AI and in 7/42. While the AI does do some stupid things, it does surprise you quite a bit because it does do some stupid things, lol. In the early stags of the game I had an Allied SF running around nothern Japan wecking havoc with my shipping. They actually invaded one of the small northern islands too. I have another thread with a screen shot if you wanted to see. Java was a hell of a nut to crack. It took me a lot more troops and time than I expected. I did not get rid of the last Allied units until late June/42. Not sure as to why, but my thinking is that the AI took units out of OZ to reinforce. Plus there were many naval battles around Java too which made things interesting. So the AI is not a bad experience as long as you can live with its limitations. The trick to a fun game that goes the distance as Japan is to NOT try and run amuck against the Allied AI, i.e. do NOT try and eliminate China, OZ, India, etc. All of these are easily doable against the AI imho. Limit the expansion to most of China, all of Burma, and Northern OZ. Also do not go further East or South than Norema. This should give the AI enough room to be able to launch a comeback. If that is what you want anyway. Also watch your autovictory ratio to make sure it satys under 4:1 on 1/1/43 and so on as it is very easy to lose track and end the game sooner that you like. One final note is once you get Japan setup for the 1st turn, save the damn file and NEVER overwrite it . This way you can save yourself a lot of time provided that there are no database changes or mods you are using. Either of these would require a fresh restart.
