Greetings,

The title say's it all .......... How in hades can German 81mm mortars reach out and kill Soviet Army spt Arty (152mm for example), it happens with appalling regularity, and is ludicrous ................ I have been a serving officer for 25 years and short of a complete rout, breakout, and pursuit (through the depth posns), it just cannot happen.

I would tend to agree with you, but I also know that Soviet artillery in WWII was quite often used at "open sights" range. Their current (modern) tactics have a battery of 122mm or 152mm SP Howitzers in the advance units along with a tank platoon and a motorized infantry company that are there to support their recon elements. So this may just be a feature trying to duplicate those tactics.

Ranges can quickly close in, it's one of the flaws of the current combat system. There's also a difference between divisional and support artillery. The vintage 152mm howitzers in the divisions are short ranged.
