TF18 saw a slight improvement in crew after sinking merchies running from Manila...

Agreed, if he is. My thought is that he is too good to do that. I'd be watching out for a "Fortress Palembang" type op somewhere else. Keep your recon and pickets moving outward fast and see if you can pick up any activity at the edges. But, yes, you have to keep up the expansion pace until you find out where he has drawn the line. I don't think there is any other real option for the IJ player.

Japanese players go after the big three bases (Manila, Clark, and Bataan) and don't look there (don't have game open to give you actual base).

Batangas? Heck - I'll recon aaaaaaaawll of dem bases! lol. Well the PI is not the only place Chris is pulling back - he seems to bedrawing his Chinese troops back also.

I've got Mavis flying from Kotas Bharu to scope out Palembang. My hope is to get my 3 para-units to Kuching or Sinkawang and drop in on Palembang. I was hoping for speed on this operation but I don'tthink I'll achieve the time frame I was hoping for. I want to capture the NW tip of Borneo and shut down Singapore Air Ops B4 I try pushing an Amphibious invasion through to capture Palembang base.

TF Suzume Bachi was about 850 miles east of Legaspi and making good speed for their jump-off point into battle against the British and American forces, the Isle of Babeldaob. Orders were to refuel and then proceed east into the Celebes Sea to engage targets of opportunity.

Commander Keto Tokunaga of the Torpedo Boat Hato tried to keep a stoic face but he was young for his rank and probably just as excited as any of the rest of his crew to have such an opportunity to face the enemy. The Hato was 960 tons of lean, mean, fighting machine, with a complement of 129 ratings and officers. Twin shafts pushed by Kampon water tube boilers and impulse turbines pushed the smaller ship along at an impressive 30 knots. Armed with three torpedo mounts of three tubes each, three 12cm/45 guns, and a pair of Depth Charge Launchers, the nimble Hato was the ultimate wasp in the small swarm of this task force.

There was something about smaller warships that brought forth a bit of a strut in a keel-member’s walk. No one wanted to be on the receiving end of anything greater than a 20mm shell but at the same time, the Hato had some teeth! They were kind of like an egg shell armed with a sledge hammer, thought Commander Tokunaga to himself as he allowed the Hato to slowly fall back along the port flank of the Mayo and the two Torpedo Cruisers that trailed behind.

Keto paused for a moment and looked again at the flank of one of those Torpedo Cruisers. Both the Oi & the Katakami sported five 4-tube mounts along each side and each ship could launch a single broadside of twenty torpedoes! In his mind’s eye Keto could picture the Suzume Bachi launching their Long Lance torpedoes on an unsuspecting group of enemy warships on a moonless night. They would be like assassins – striking from the depths of darkness at the heart of their prey! Childhood stories flitted at the back of his mind and he almost grinned to himself.

Crewmembers bristled the superstructure looking for enemy periscopes or the large lumbering American search planes they called PBYs. The war was only six days old and everyone wanted to be a part of it.

The sky was blue with a mottle of clouds, and there was a slight breeze from the east. Having slid far back past the last of the Torpedo Cruisers, the mighty Hato surged forth again towards the front of the task force while performing their mission of patrolling one flank of their task force.

Keto could hardly wait for some real action.

Someone tried doing that in an early AE game (I forget who), but despite having a huge advantage in troops he was getting horrible adjusted AVs when attacking......don't know if it will be possible against a veteran like CT. Good luck anyway, should be an entertaining read!

Timing hurt me here. And I went to the well one time too many. I've got a BB TF coming hard on the heels but I didn't pay attention to the routing. The BBs took a long way around and I should have sent them orders to use direct routing. Hi Mike - 149/151 is what I'm remembering...

two of my 3 divisions are now en route to Kwajalein (I'm clearing mines @ Hong Kong so I can get out the third Div). Many ENG units plus air support are headed to the Marshall's too.

Bettys - need more Bettys!!! Plus another HQ with torpedo supplies.

Commander Keto stared at aft end of the CL Naka. It was a smoking wreck. It looked like a bomb had gone off and Keto tried to imagine what it must have been like while crew members were battling a blaze while engaged in battle. The aft end of the Naka bustled with work crews cleaning and trying to make temporary repairs. Part of a crumpled wing from what had been an Alf search plane was being manhandled by five or six men with shirts stripped off and brown backs glistening in the sunlight from their sweat.

The CL Naka along with the DDs Harusame, Yudachi, and the Samidare, had come across the Clemson class DD Pillsbury during the night of December 12th near Mendano while hunting for fleeing merchant ships out of the Philippines. A furious battle had ensued with the range closing at one point to almost 3,000 meters! In the light of the American destroyer’s battle damage her hull number, DD-227 could clearly be seen by the spotters of the Naka’s task force. During the battle the Naka had been the only Japanese ship to take a hit, and initially the damage had appeared to be light.

The hunting had been most excellent for the Naka's TF. Later that night the Naka’s task force had taken out the AO Trinity, and then around 0200 they had run into another allied destroyer tentatively identified as the Pope. During the chase the allied destroyer had lead the Naka directly to a pair of fleeing merchant ships that had been identified as the Cebu & the Letouche. The Pope had escaped and the Naka’s task force was sinking the two merchant ships when a great explosive fire had erupted on the aft end of the Naka. At first her crew had thought they’d been fired upon by some unseen enemy warship. The search plane was scattered all over the aft end of the Naka and fires were spread over most of the Naka’s tail. Fire crews had responded rapidly but confusion from the mighty explosion that had taken place had stirred up the whole task force as lookouts on the Naka and her destroyer complement searched the waters away from the sinking merchant ships while the whole task force immediately went to full speed to break away from the still flaming merchant ships in an attempt to reduce their silhouettes from the supposed enemy attack.

Later on, after the Naka’s task force had concluded they were not engaged with enemy ships and the fires aboard the Naka had been contained, Captain Tawara had performed an investigation of the fire. Apparently the Alf float plane had been damaged during the fight with the Pillsbury, and her once full fuel tank had started to leak onto the deck. There was probably a small fire smoldering within the Alf itself as it had literally exploded, sending flaming pieces of the search plane over the tail of the Naka. With fuel from the Alf already on the aft deck of the Naka the fire had erupted Instantaneously into a huge blaze that at one point had nearly engulfed the Naka’s entire tail.

Commander Keto could only shake his head in empathy at the fire damage to the Naka, and he could not help but think what would happen to one of the torpedo cruisers in the Hato’s task force if they experienced a similar fire near their torpedo turrets. There were forty torpedoes sitting on their decks… It might be wise not to be too close to the Oi or the Kitakama should they have an opportunity to engage the enemy.

Status: offline 		I've got the 56th Rgt. marching from Kota Bharu to Kuantan. They are at 28 Fatigue and MOV seems to be slow. Supplies are about x2 needed for this unit.

Does anyone ever rest their troops while not in a base to reduce fatigue? If so - how fast does the fatigue drop from a day of rest?

They are marching in jungle on a secondary road but they don't seem to be putting in much more then 7-10 miles per day...

Never rested in open. 7-10 on 2nd road in jungle, depending upon the devices in the unit, that can be correct.

As his hands warmed to the small white porcelain tea cup with cherry blossoms painted along the sides, Nabeshima paused to ask the gods for good hunting in the waters they were assigned to patrol.

Task force Suzume Bachi had picked up another pair of destroyers – the Hatsukaze and the Tokitsukaze - when they arrived at Babeldaob, and now the task force number eight warships. The Maya was the only ship in the task force with search aircraft, and the Maya had a pair of the F1M2 bi-planes that flew anti-sub searches plus a single Aichi E13A1 with a much greater fuel range then that of the bi-planes. Nabeshima used the E13 for long-ranged searches of naval targets. In the past he hadn’t really had an opportunity to use the floatplanes due to peace-time restrictions, but those restrictions were now out the window.

Over the last week the radio had been in constant chatter (albeit encrypted chatter) as Nippon’s navy set out to strike down their enemy counterparts. The men of task force Suzume Bachi were anxious to do their part in the war and now they were getting their chance. The first real war patrol! To fire their guns at the enemy! To throw off the yoke of condensating political clap-trap that the European countries, Great Britain, and the United States of America had used to try and grab control of territories now called the Dutch-East-Indies. No, it was time for Nippon to take what was rightfully theirs. It was a time of war.

All of these attacks in China are increasing the experience of my pilots in this theatre. I'm thinking that if Chris fails to start using air ops in China then this is probably a better training method (OTJ) then just using traing groups out of Japan. It'll be interesting to see how things go...

I've got the 1st Raiders about a day out plus the original invasion force back about 3 days... I was thinking that with the Nells softening up the target plus the high EXP/MOR values ofthe 1st & 3rd SNLF that things might go my way. This is a similiar result to what happened at Rabaul, which leads me to the conclusion that ground attacks are best done with overwhelming force. I need to start using a bigger hammer...

Status: online 		I take the time to quickly send CVL Rjuyo to Takao to get her airgroups re-sized (36 Zero and 13 Kates) before she actually goes to war. Getting rid of those Claudes would have helped with greater numbers.

OT - Naval search is your friend. Did you send any Mavis down to Truk to look over Rabaul before moving ships in that direction?? We have both played this game long enough to know that a possible Allied opening move is to send his 2 CVs to this area. Been there...done that!

Status: offline 		So what's the deal with HQ units and setting Future Objective? Specifically - what to do with the Royal Thai Army HQ that is staticly assigned to Bangkok.

Under 8.2.1.4 Objectives it says:

The Set Future Objective command has to do with Planning for action at an Objective (or
Planning points). When the Set Future Objective button is pressed, the map will appear and
you must click on a base/beach hex. This will set the unit’s future objective. The number in
parenthesis next to the objective is reset to 0 if the objective set is a new objective. This
number will increase 1 or 2 points per turn, with a maximum value of 100. The higher the
value, the greater the benefit the unit will receive when the unit participates in combat in the
objective hex (whether attacker or defender). There is also value obtained if a nearby HQ has
Planning points accumulated towards the objective when combat takes place there.


But under 8.1.1 Headquarters under Command HQs it says "The bonuses are impacted by
the leaderships rating of the commander of the HQs."

Of course the Thai Army is an Army HQ with a range of 5. "Army - Helps with ground combat. Ground units in range can gain up to a 10% bonus to their Assault Value (whether attacking or defending)."

So my question is what do you set the Future Objective to for the Thai Army? Bangkok - let it get up to a value of 100 so you can increase stats on the unit? Does setting FO for the Thai Army HQ really matter?

Status: offline 		The Royal Thai Army won't see combat for quite a while.

However, what I would do is select a base (within 5 hexes range of Bangkok) where you expect your Allied opponent will attack you in future (i.e. the most likely invasion point of Thailand within five hexes of Bangkok) and set that as your HQ's future objective.

Your Thai units at that base will obviously also have the same future objective (that base) - their prep points will increase until 100 and then you have the advantage of them getting the chance to improve their experience (not sure what the cap is on Thai units for experience gain by training, but the manual lists it).

Another advantage is that, once you are actually invaded in Thailand (let's hope that's only in 1945) all your units at that base will obtain a nice AV bonus while defending.
