I am impressed with that raid, I need something similar. Terry is playing one hell of good shell game with me.

I agree with the idea of creating a third SAG. He has potentially two in the area, and if they get past one SAG you want another credible SAG there to make them fight instead of going after transports. Unless you are expecting heavy coast defence fire, your landings should get along without the SAG ships embeded in it.

Not sure which way you meant your question about "nav bombard". If you mean bombardment by surface ships, the answer is that the targets of the bombardment are random, so you don't get to choose what they shoot at. I think the bombardment will take place as long as there are enemy targets identified by D/L in the hex. I am not sure if some of the shells will hit a partially completed AF or Port since you can't know how far along these facilites are until they show up as completed. If there are detected land units or disbanded ships in the hex they should be reason enough to bombard. Enemy ships still in TF will be treated as Surface Combat targets.

If by nav bombard you mean a bomber Port Strike on ships disbanded in port, it may not happen because there is no port to strike. Naval Strike should still work on ships in a TF since that is independent of any port. If you cannot get your aircraft to attack enemy ships disbanded in a dot hex, try sending in SBDs set to Nav Search in a narrow arc to the hex. The still carry bombs while on Nav Search.

Thanks guys.  I did create a 3 SAG.

24th Feb

No intel on carriers.

Akyab
We bomb the stack of Jap LCU's just south and lose 8 2E bombers for nothing.  Will change the alt to 6k next time.

Milne Bay
We sneak in and drop off troops this turn.  I am amazed at this.  Koniu didn't see them coming either.  He was not happy about my TF's popping up out of nowhere.  We hit 2 RO boats one for 5 and the other for 6, I hope its enough to make them return home.  I see a lot of subs around my CVs.  It looks like a lot of my troops did land so tomorrow I might be able to land all or most of my troops.  but I am expecting lots of attacks.  I only bought 1 Aus BDE and an armor unit to attack with.  Now I see a SLNF and 14th A div/ 2, so Koniu has flown in some troops.  I am LRCAPing with P38s.  I don't know if my fighters CAPing my TF will intercept these transports.  I also ordered bombers to go in.  I want to knock down some of the defenders before I attack.

Not much else going on elsewhere.  I am moving bullets and butts all over the place.

Of course that 22 AV is only from the units that were actually bombarding. His flown in troops likely do not have any artillery [unless they brought mortars], so their AV may be unaccounted for. Still, without their commander [a /2 fragment does not have the boss] and with little support the flown in troops should be weak. Attack! Repeat - Attack! [apologies to Bill Halsey for the plagiarism].

Quick update.

KB and LAB crash the party. lots of action today. Lex takes 3 TT`s but able to make 11 knots. Ent takes 2 TT`s and a bomb hit, she's in good shape, she can make 28 knots. They are now in twotwo different TFs. Ent and group should make it into LAB range. Lex can make it to the extreme LAB range. Lex can make it barring a sub or more air strikes.

2 Be it BBs take 2 TFs each and are down to 12 knots. US CA is heavily damaged and prob won't make it. Several DDs are damaged from 2 surface actions they might stay or go, don't know yet. I see what looks like an amphibious TF is heading to Milne Bay. The 2 BBs will stay and protect the beach. I have a CA with several DDs untouched that will try to intercept the amphibious TF, I see a small SAG with what looks like 3 DDs with it. more later posted interuptus

I'm back. I will probably leave the CA at MB also.

Two of our amphibious TFs ran when the first DD SAG attacked. Our CA SAG roughed them up. The next CD SAG ran into one of our CL SAGs. We traded DDs this time. Lots of sub action Lex and Ent get lucky with missed shots.

Air strikes come next. We do good until the KB launches. They do all the the damage. Several more ships are damaged from what I have mentioned. I will post them when I'm home. Our strike dissent get thru Konius CAP. We do shot down 107 Zeros 75 Vals 45 Kates 35 Bettys and 11 Bells for 48 SBDs and 48 F4Fs. I think I tour the KBs air arm a new one, but at what cost.

The amphibious TF at MB will be broken down and sent back to Aus by different routes.

I am thinking of doing a deliberate attack tomorrow at MB. I'm also thinking of sending a few Fletcher DDs into MB to pick a fight.

Aaaw, Crap. I posted a long reply that the forum ate up. I´ll try to summarize what I wrote.

Ouch on KB crashing the party. But its kind of to be expected. You are only 1 month away from 180 Hellcats per months. Once you have equipped your CVs with Hellcats the KB have become the hunted. I bet koniu knows this and takes the chance to knock off your CVs just before that.

I tend to be very cautious at times but I think you are just playing right into his hands now. Don´t leave the BBs to get sunk. If you can get them away the will be absolutely invaluable later on to soften up coastal bases and Atolls. So what if you loose Milne? You can take it back later. If you don´t loose anything more the a CA this is certainly a victory for you! 250 of the elite KB pilots killed for a CA! That is a exchange I would be very happy about. But if you throw two BBs into the losses its not that sweet anymore!

Send in the Fletchers and withdraw everything else. I just recently found out what Fletchers can do. Especially against Jap DDs they are deadly!

Good luck!

Joc:  Good call with the BBs.

Quick update before work.

KB did not pursue my CVs.  It is still in the area though.  Ent, and York make it to Aus safely.  Lex is 2 days out barring subs she should make it.  We take MB.  We also sink 3 more DDs, 2 more with Heavy damage, and 3 more on fire.  My loses are so far 1 CA (another very close to sinking), 3 DDs, and several transports sunk.  I have a CA, CL, and CVE close on the brink.  The CVE was hit by 2 TTs when the KB crashed the party.  It is still afloat making 3 knots and actually repairing damage right now.  In total I have lost 4 DDs, CA, and some transports for 250 Jap AC, 8 to 10 DDs, and Milne Bay.

I wish this wouldn't of happened on my weekend to work so I could of posted more info.

I think thats a good exchange! You will swim in DDs in a few months and the old CAs arn´t that good anyway. I think I´m getting 15-30 per month. Koniu is certainly going to miss the DDs too. And the KB pilots he simply cannot replace. Even if he takes the best he has there are none as good as the pre war ones!

Did you loose any AKAs/APAs?

Get Hellcats on the CVs and come back for Milne then is my advice.

Joc:   Koniu is missing his DDs right now and a lot of pilots.  I don't have APA's or AKA's.  I didn't lose any of the APs or AK's.  They will go to a port and wait for upgrades.

27th Feb

No sight of enemy carriers.  Believed to be around Truk.

China
Bombed

Christmas Is IO
Jap BF is heading there according to intel.

Truk
2 subs are hit from Air ASW could this be from the KB?

East coast of Aus
Another CA is sunk by sub. I knew that would happen.  Lexington is a day out of Cooktown along with a SAG full of damaged ships including 2 BBs.  The problem is subs parked infront of it.  I have ASW air and sea working the hexs.  CVE is still afloat.  Damaged CL is heading to Carnes with subs in its path.  DM got TTed by a sub also.  Trying to get supplies to MB and TI.  MB now has a fort.  Hoping I can get the rest of my damaged ships back to port.

Everything else is quiet.

Carriers heading towards Truk.  Apparently their was a collision between a CV and CA.  Intel from Koniu.

Milne Bay
2 Jap DDs sink xAK, 2 APDs, and an AVD.  AF 44% port 30%.  Supply 3k and climbing.

Makin
Japs land and take the island.

Our CVE makes Cooktown and is now on pier side repair.   Other damaged ships are heading to their ports for repair.

Burma
We are sending a large force down to Shwebo.  Shwebo is unoccupied, but Mandalay is well defended with reinforcements one hex away.  I have a thought for this operation.  Crossing the river would be bad.  I am thinking of bringing in over 100 P38s and sweep his CAP to death then bomb Mandalay to dust.  Akyab South, I am trying to flank this stack with 2 IDs and close the hex doors on Koniu.

Aus
Lots of troops waiting and training.  I am currently replacing Navy and Marine AC.  Once MB gets an AF planes will fly in and provide CAP for resupply and reinforcements.  Mines should be dropped off tonite.  Once MB is good I will focus on getting Tagula resupplied and reinforced.  Losing the fast transports hurt.

I am trying to replenish my planes and pilots while ships are moving to ports for repair. MB has almost 4k worth of supply with AF 58% and Port at 44%.  Fighter squadrons are ready to go.  TI is not doing very well off loading supplies from xAKs. The planes that flew their are repairing daily 20 still remain on the island damaged.

No signs of enemy carriers.

Burma
Massive sweeps over my stack heading towards Schwedo.  I expect bombings tomorrow.  180 bombers are spotted at Rangoon.  I have 5 AA units in my stack so they should be able to hold them off.

MB and TI
Sweeps over both.  MB is 2 days away from having an AF.  I spotted a TF heading somewhere towards Buna or Luna not for sure where but bombers are on alert and ready to attack.

Maloelap and Wotje
Bombed.

As you know .. it depends on what type of AA units light or heavy .. and the altitude the IJ decide to attack . what I do find is that the concentration of AA even of light type and the attack at 12,000 feet disrupts the bombing run and lowers accuracy .. at least I think

Your game is getting to that interesting stage where the IJ have to make some decisions and cannot cover it all .. then there is March '44

......

I find Burma the most interesting of all the fronts in this game. The crossing of the Irrawaddy River for example is a great point.

1. First, units not on a base hex in a Malaria Zone take some P(x) of disablement / Disruption. Unlike any other area one cannot simply stack engineers, build fort levels in clear terrain and wait for the shock attack, beacuse attrition will take take its toll. Not enough as compared to historical values but insiduious enough that when the big battle comes .. some forces are disabled. The Malaira zone rules has an intersting effect as we progress to point #2 ..

2. The clear terrain hex right south of Swebo is especally vulnerable as it sits one hex away from Magwe and Mandalay. The hex just south of Magwe is also especally vulnerable as I prefer a the indirect route toward toward Toungoo cutting LOC in teh Irrawaddy Valley.. Once you find the weak hex -- 4E's and 2E's are quite capable of raining hell on earth on these clear terrain targets and attriting units. What is far more important in my opinion is the results NOT reported in the combat results -- Disruption. It appears to me that disuption/disablement is affected by the malaria area rules and units suffer some sort of delay in recovery if they are not in a base hex. I do know that disabled squads have some P(x) of attirtion while not in a base hex in a malaria zone.

3. A river crossing in my book is exactly like smacking an atoll -- without the added attrition of the amphibious phase ... simply units are disrupted by the river crossing and the attacker is forced to shock. I beleive it is key to have the defense as disrupted as the attacking forces. Large 4E-2E raids ensure these results. The other point that is important in my opinion is that units under air attack go from move to combat mode. This action delays the movement of reserves.

Once you cross the Irrawaddy River whatever armor you have will have a field day crushing the IJA ....

I do think it takes a lot of stratgic planning although to truly break Burma. For example. I beleive 1 maybe 2 USA divisions are required to provide overwheling numbers in the area. That would mean that Burma is truly the center of focus rather than a sideshow .. although early 44 the 14th Army and units under Slim make a pretty good OOB package.. Cetainly, I think at least 5 -7 USN Seabee units to build up airfields in India.

Just my .02 ...

Aces:  I agree Burma is an interesting and really important theater. Thanks for your insight into Burma.   More on Burma later.

4th Mar

Carriers at Truk

Burma
My stack of LCU's are just 1 hex north of Shwebo.  I will stop their and build up the base and prepare to move on the Japs.  Mandalay has around 200 fighters with 37k worth of troops.  I don't think my fighters or bombers can break his CAP yet.  I am thinking of bringing in 100 P38s, but not for sure yet.  If I can get across the river he's done for.  I have several plans on the table right now just not sure what one is right.  I will decide that when the time is right. 140 or so figthers swept the hex then 180 bombers attacked this stack today from 14k, they killed around 120 men and lost atleast 4 to flak and around 30 or so damaged.  Not enought to cause me to put any LRCAP up.

Hex south of Akyab.  I have 3 IDs and several small units with about 5 Jap IDs and 1 tank Div.  I wasn't expecting so many troops here.  I can't attack him and force him to move so I am flanking him.  Tomorrow 1 Indian ID will be on his right flank and I will close off that hex.  Once that is done I should have another ID in the same hex.  They will move to the hex south where the road is and cut him off completely.  If he is watching me he will have to fall back or be surrended.

Solomons
MB is ready to have an AF and Port. AF will take 1 day to be a Lv 1 and port needs 2 days.  So I am stopping the AF for a day.  I have troop ships loaded and moving out to sea.  I want to time this move just right.  My recon of Rabaul is down right now, but should be up tomorrow.  TI was bombed today. I need to get a Naval BF their now.  I have one on ships moving in that direction.  Maybe I can drop them off quickly (1 turn) and get the hell out of dodge.

Maloelap and Wotje
Both are bombed and running low on supplies.  I am moving my few CVs to here, so supplies can be dropped off.  I am also thinking of running 2 Omaha CLs into Roi Namur to pound the AF, then follow up with air strikes from my CVs.

Truk
Recon shows a CV in port.  This goes with what Koniu told me.  Wish I had bombers that could reach Truk.

Burma
Build up Shwebo, then look for an opening to cross the river.  I'm not ready to tell my plans yet.  I am putting 2 plans into motion now.  Just in case one will work.  Most of mine don't.

Akyab south.  Flanking movement is going on.  I have a small HQ unit that will move into the contested hex closeing off the east hex side.  Then they will move to the south hex side and try to close that off.  If he retreats I will follow and keep trying to flank him.  Ramree Island is being prepped for, If I do this he will have to fall way back or be cut off and destroyed.
