Nope, it's an SBD, the top line of lettering on the tail most likely says "Navy". USAAF would probably have a serial no on the tail.

No number on the fueelage is odd, though.

Most likely from Ranger.

How about testing hard packed dirt runways in Texas or CA.

I'm just wondering why the pilot is doing a version of a gutter ball!

Is that dust from the right wheel or smoke from the engine. I think its from the engine.

Perhaps he took fire or had a mechanical problem and had to set down.

Ranger, Sangamon, Suwannee, and Santee provided air support for the Casablanca landings. Not sure if the CVE's had SBD's aboard so it might well be from Ranger.

That looks like a navy paint job.

The three CVEs used during Operation Torch had SBDs on board too.  It looks like a damaged SBD diverted to the emergency landing strip on the beach head.  It was common practice to divert damaged aircraft to such a strip right after an invasion.

The first Free French to set foot in liberated France after D-Day was a pilot flying with the RAF who's Spitfire had "engine trouble" while covering the landing beaches and he diverted to the emergency strip.  When nothing was found wrong with his engine, he flew back to England.

During the Battle of Leyte Gulf a number of Princeton's CAP that were left airborne when the carrier was hit were redirected to the emergency strip at Tacloben.  The strip there was right on the beach and the Hellcats were pushed off into the surf as they landed.  My father was attached to the first B-25 squadron into Tacloben and he remembers the beach was littered with Hellcats.  He didn't know why at the time, someone told him the Navy had lost some carriers.

The photo appears with the caption, "A U.S. Navy dive-bomber uses a road as a runway near Safi, French Morocco, on December 11, 1942, but hits a soft shoulder in the takeoff. (AP Photo)"

SBD should have been an excellent close support aircraft and a decent tank killer.  I believe this had machine guns and not canon.  I think it would match up well against a Stuka as a ground attack aircraft. No Il-2 to be sure but in numbers it would have been a pain in the ass.

The Army abandoned dive bombers after the A-24's debut in New Guinea.  Ultimately the P-47 was a better round attack aircraft.  It could carry a heavier load, had 8X .50s it could put on target (instead of the 1X of the SBD) and was fundamentally tougher.  It was also faster, which is a plus and a minus.  High speed means AA is going to have a tougher time shooting you down, but it reduced accuracy.

The SBD was designed as a ship killer and that is where is shined.  It did end its in the Marines, but they preferred Corsairs for close support.  At the end of the war most SBDs were serving on backwater bases keeping isolated Japanese bases isolated.
