West Coast: Many escorts arrive to help ensure safe delivery of another massive resupply to CenPac.

CenPac: More sub patrols are sent west. The sinking of the Maya is toasted at Pearl.

SoPac-SwPac: Yorktown II makes good time, she makes 200nm from Australia. She has 38F (major) and 17Engine. FAT-1 is 7 days out from picking up engineers deep in SoPac. FAT-2 is still loading at Suva. Army Corp engineers make 12mi north on New Ireland, their fatigued and a little disrupted. Swatting mosiquitos and removing infectious ticks along the way. Kepp your civies on and your boots bloused. The 1st Australian Div combines and prepares begins training for '44.

Burma: IJAF fighters perform a good sweep at Akyab and IJAF has spotted 2 of 3 supply convoys trying to make port there. We send in another squadron to help CAP.

Very little to report; SwPac we get a fish into a IJN CS and sink a large xAK off Japan. The IJAF has been quite in China for 48 hours. Yorktown II makes another 100nm to sea. Large TFs are still unloading at Pearl. I should mention IJN subs got a tanker and an LST in the Solomons last week and what I suspect are SSTs are frequent visitors to Guadalcanal, Rossels, and Tulagi in the southern Solomons. FAT-2 is still loading supplies and FAT-1 is prodding towards the rear.

Mostly logistics and planning now. We plan to relieve the 1st Marines on Makin soon and sortie on Truk. I would like to get in recon range of the place first ergo Kavieng must get operational. In that vain we are lifting some construction Bns close by which have not completed work in the Solomons leaving the final build outs to base engineers and small Seabee outfits. Yorktown II suffers no additional damage, now at sea for 48 hours. I feel better.
BB Revenge repairs its third hull damage point; she now stands at 73F. All carriers in CenPac are operational now. Supply in CenPac for the opening 1944 offensives should stand at 1,5oo,ooo pts supply and 8oo,ooo pts fuel by Christmas, not including forward areas (perhaps another 75,oooS and 30,oooF). Suva has ample stores should we require a quick "shot in the arm". We drive some Bettys off over Akyab trying to get at our supply ships and escorts. Chinese squadrons are staging into Ledo. We have some expanding C-46A Sqds at Ledo; Tsuyung shows 263 supply today; we order 1,ooo pt supply cache; 30 Commandos (C-46As) will transport tomorrow and will see where we are.

I have 5 CVs and an armfull of CVLs. CVEs are best described as numerous. They are also concentrated and all ready to put to sea as of yesterday. Truk. hmmm. I want a recon first but I plan to strike it with 450 aircraft from the carriers after a mega airfield raid by Liberators. It looks as though Kavieng will not be ready to support the B24s until after new years so I'm looking at quick island grab or quick in and out by a seaplane tender in the area to get some ariel shots of the airfield and port. I have eight Divisions between Mac and CenPac which I plan to employ in a new Operation which will replace OpJigsaw's final two objectives and add OpTriplePlay (the Marianas) in one large "flowing" attack. I have the tenders and oilers, transports, and merchantmen. Planning for most of the units is far progressed. CV Intrepid should reach Pearl with 1 more CVL and 3 CVEs and a great deal of the escorts above around Christmas. Truk will be bypassed but hammered and isolated unless I see under 200AV from the air there. I plan to use it as target practice for the Superforts while the B24s work over the Philipines. In short I'm working on a recon Op for Rabaul now as Kavieng is still heavily damaged with no engineers present (yet!) and want to strike any shipping there as soon as possible. He should have some juicy targets there from the naval battle off New Ireland last month. I hope three cruisers and a CVL and CV. He also has had 3 Kongo class BBs hit in the last thirty days in the AO.

SwPac-SoPac: Yorktown II incurs 6 floatation damage so I route her to the nearest friendy port. the next day the crew fixes 2 points so I route her due east again. We'll see. TFs leave for New Ireland. FAT-1 should reach the rear area fuel depot in 24 hours and begin loading construction engineers for New Ireland also.

CenPac: New command ships for amphibious HQs depart Pearl to pick up their respective HQs. Ghormly will remain in Pearl. He will not lead from the front. We are unloading HUGE quanities of fuel and supplies for '44 in Pearl. The fast attack carriers await Intrepid. We are still fiddling around with our plans.

Burma: RAF DBs make a nice showing in central Burma even while trained for naval attack. Supply to China is going well with the new transports. Tsutung is well over 1,ooo pts in 72hours.

China: We snuck a Chinese Mitchell squadron into China and it won't fly. The CO is horrible and there are Japs moving in the open.

I have some thoughts on Truk in my ol' AAR but ..

1. 3 - 4 ACM's . figure 400 mines. When I thought about it .. Alfred commented that either bombing the port and fuel to zero and/or hitting these ACM's is critical.
2. In the process Truk has real 88mm flak batteres in the fortress unit .. it is in my opinion one of the few places IJ flak works .. the IJ also have fighters ..
3. The base has to be reduced as that same fort has 8 inch naval guns that will likely rip apart any naval invasion.

Thus like history .. Truk might be better to just bypass ..

CenPac: Even the Pearl Harbor port is overwhelmed by the tonnage reaching the Pacific. I underestimated how much supply and fuel I lifted there. Another command amphib TF leaves Pearl to pick up 1st Amphib HQ. Seabees depart Pearl for New Ireland.

SoPac: FAT-1 reaches Hiva and picks up engineers. Likewise Suva ships out a Reg to the front. Yorktown II repairs another hull point and is prodding eastward at 8 knots. It will be another 4-5 days before the construction Reg reaches I Corp HQ at Kavieng from the jungle road.

India: FUBAR, Don't have time to explain before work, but its PP related.

Burma: Spitfires sweep Prome. As the CAP and sweeps get bigger, the losses seem to be going down?!

China: We release some of the supply from Tsuyung to Changsha to expedite the 11th Army group Divs and Red Army Divs refitting and taking replacements.

CenPac: I have a IJN carrier aircreft sighting at Johnston Island; we prepare a reception commitee, just in case. We lose a destryer escorting a command ship to the Gilberts to a sub.

SwPac-SoPac: Enginners are 54m from Kavieng as another Reg is just offshore of Namatanai. Yorktown II is holding together and making good progress.

Burma: We plan a little switch up in the airwar.

China: Mitchells just won't fly with that "yellow" (no pun) squadron CO.

CenPac: 8 Carriers and a fast battleship TF put to sea to scout Johnston Island. No sightings. No allied aircraft fly anywhere. One IJAF combat action in any theater. Three Bettys are spalshed over the RN DDs.

December 23rd 1943

West Coast: CV Intrepid makes port in California. A CVL and escorts will depart with her in 24 hours.

CenPac: No IJN sightings after the fly over at Johnston. Probably a sub plane. Why recon Johnston? We do get a Cat over Truk. Its our first flyover even if by an untrained recon team. It doesnt spot much; a CA at sea, a dozen planes, and under 8000 troops. We will fly it again.

SwPac-SoPac: Engineers are 48 hours from Kavieng using the road with another Reg leaving tonight from Namatanai. Cats spot APs at Hollandia and we order a largest raid targeting the port, airfield and ground facilities. YorktownII making good progress east. An ARD at Suva is ordered to Townsville to support the BB Alabama.

Burma: We switched to land targets for a day and get 500 Japs at Shwebo.

China: 1 squadron of newly trained P40s report to their new Cinese strip. Mitchells will not fly under their current CO. Wonder if I withdraw them I get a better one? No use just making the base a bigger target.

Christmas Eve 1943

CenPac: 8000+ support personel ordered to prepare for a strategic move from Pearl in 48 hours. We get Cats over Truk again; Aces, your right. 12 fighters/9940 troops/263 guns!/22AFVs.

SwPac: Hollandia is being heavily reinforced. from 32-3400 through out 1943 to 13ooo now. We schedule another heavy raid for Christmas. Kavieng: the 8th Constr. Reg will arrive by jungle trail tomorrow. The 43 Constr. Reg should arrive by see tomorrow night. The 15th USN eng began marching yesterday and are 10 days out.

Burma: We get alot of Oscars and Tonys today, around 30 for a loss of 4. Scheba is now heavily garrisoned. This is good. IJAF fighters have staged back into Lashio.

Orioles on a roll and the Ravens play their first preseason tonight. I will post map of planned Allied aggression Friday night for comment.

No, I lost Wake pretty quick. I have nothing north of Makin. I will send you my '44 Pacific planning map Fri or Sun, you can tell me what you think. The support for this will need to originate from CenPac as far as the USMC is concerned, but the opening moves will be by the Australians followed by a rapid follow up assault by the US Army. As far as the Corsairs its hard to tell. I gained air superiority in SwPac-SoPac maybe a year ago. Jap airbases have been empty from Lunga Point to Hollandia for a long time. All the USMC aircraft are in the Solomons and Gilberts and have not been challenged. Needless to say thay have nice attributes and the crews are veteran.

December 25th 1943

CenPac: V Amphib HQ being lifted out of the Gilberts. A third ARD arrives on the west coast. Carriers refueling.

SwPac: YorktownII continues its cruise east; no more problems. At last engineers and base forces arrive at Kavieng. IJN subs lurking all around the northern Solomons. IJ buildup at Hollandia continues. Our raid does little and its obvious he has brought some flak along.

Burma: RAF DBs take a beating over Schwebo as do P40s over Lashio. The IJAF shell game in Burma is good but I believe I have the better attrition numbers.

Got an interesting note wth a replay today:

"Here is the replay from this turn. I’m getting frustrated with the recent inability of my fighter groups to do anything but get shot down in droves even with air abilities of 70.

Next turn to follow when I recover my composure."

While it is a good sign to hear this, he will be surprised, I think, by the quality of the pilots he is facing when I reply.

You should give serious consideration to the altitude at which you operate your Vengeance dive bombers.

The British never have a substantial production run of medium bombers. Eventually most of their bombing capability takes the form of the Vengeance dive bombers. When that occurs, if you operate them as dive bombers, you will experience substantial losses. As usually there are not that many enemy ships in range of the Vengeance operating from Indian/Burmese bases, the opportunity cost to have them flying as ersatz level bombers is not that great.

Raid detected at 113 NM, estimated altitude 35,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 33 minutes

Allied air raids:

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid detected at 32 NM, estimated altitude 34,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

CenPac: V Amphib HQ picked up in the Gilberts. The docks are over crowded at Pearl so we have to wait 48 hours before embarking more troops.

SwPac-SoPac: Engineers now total over 80 with their vehicles at Kavieng; damage being repaired rapidly. Halsey, Sopac air HQ CO will fly in shortly. IJN launches a carrier raid against Merauke. P39s rise to the occasion with good early warning and the right altitude. While we lose a few frames to shot up to continue the war they destroy the A6M5 escorts and we only lose one B17 on the ground.

Burma: Sweeps, bombing, and recon continue. We do not have air superiority.....yet. Supplies to China over the hump are making an impact,...I think.

Joe: I meant to post my reserve USMC fighter jocks, I will soon, worth seeing. Army Air Corp fighter reserve is also very deep and strong.

West Coast: The last six squadrons I can use outside the US in the states embark for the Pacific as well as Intrepid. YorktownII is 4600nm from the west coast and damage control is stable. She should reach the yards in 24 days. TF423 (amphibious command) leaves Pearl to pick up MGEN Geiger and his 1st Amphib HQ. They will rendevous with an asssault TF in January (late).

SoPac: Amphib TF forming: radio silence: waiting on 1st amphib HQ.

43rd Inf Div 100%
754th tank Bn 38%
223rd FA 39%
112th USA BF 41%
102nd construction Reg 42%
45th Seabees 93%

SwPac: BB Alabama (41S-73F-25E) awaits an ARD to assist pierside. currently at 69 days as is for what the local guys can do for her. Surface Combat TFs begin to congregate for the Aussie amphib forces under Mac. Additonal transports will arrive in 3 days. Fuel being unloaded in northern Australia to support the TFs.

Burma: IV Corp under Alexander is close to ready to commence offensive operations.
Under Alexander:
2nd British Div
18th British Div
20th Indian Div
23 Indian Div
supporting armor and Arty.

Just checked on C46A Commando replacements, I have to check again but it looked real slim. More pilots, less fatigue, keep missions to minimum for now.

China: The Chinese fighter group is united in China.

CenPac: Now the PP problem hits really hard. I can't get a skilled air task force commander for the CVs. Best is in high 30s. I maybe completely screwed.

SwPac: Kavieng: runways cleared, airfield service 7%, port 87%. There are 117 engineers with 34 vehicles there now. The 15th Naval Const. is on the jungle road. The 139th USA BF and the 184th USAF BF are unloading at Namatanai. Three Bns of Seabees loading for Namatanai from the rear area.

SoPac: Amphibious TF428.33 is loading the invasion force.

India: BB Revenge: at 73F 53% (371) We are up the proverbial creek without a boat.
