Can someone answer me a question.

How can a crippled supply ship (AK or AKL), outrun a destroyer in combat, especially considering that a supply ship couldn't outrun a destroyer if the destroyer on a bad day?

The Japs must have had some pretty speedy supply ships.

Supply ships submerge?  Wow, who would have known.  Be advised, these weren't subs.

They sank? They won the race to the sea floor....They elected to never be in direct sunlight....

They could have been obscured by smoke from the fires and the destroyers lost track of them. Or if there were two or more, they may have scattered and the destroyers were only able to find one or two before the rest were out of sight.

I know they were not subs. I have experenced the same thing in my games. They meet up then they disengage and it was Combat ships vs transports. Could be many reasons why. TF commander, weather in the hex. Might not be a question of outrunning them but losing them somehow. Over the horizon (rainbow) etc..

Ok, just making sure that it wasn't just me. The problem I guess that I have with this entire scenario is, they were all severely damaged, weather was clear, daylight combat, open seas and they just suddenly turned and in the span of about 5 turns outdistanced and then broke off contact.

If the commander is responsible, then I guess I didn't realize exactly how inept our navy commanders were in WW2.

Alternatives-the destroyers:
1) ran out of ammo or fuel to get home
2) thought they sighted a battleship
3) thought they spotted a submarine
4) got a radio message there were enemy aircraft around and decided to hightail it out of the area
5) had a task force commander with lousy ratings

Also they ran out of ops points or they had reaction range set too low.

Surface engagements seems to always end with breaking off forces.

The only case, I have seen larger TF completely sunk, is when they were caught during unloading.
