I am struggling to understand/master land combat in this game. Why can some units move out of a hex with enemy units and others cannot? I am taking a beating in N. OZ and I cannot break contact.

Welcome to the headache called land combat.  A unit needs to move through a friendly controlled hexside.  Supply state, morale and fatigue are heavy influences.
