I seem have a problem with assigned bombing missions not being sent. I had a mission from Canton Island to Baker Island airfield go as planned (less the loss of two B-17's). However from Suva to Funafuti airfield, and Savii to Funafuti airfield; Townsville and Charter Towers to the Port Morseby area ground support to help the defenses. Not a single mission has flown. Airfield sizes, supplies and HQ's seem not to be an issue.

Any ideas? Anyone?

Thanks,

What is your morale level?  What was the weather like?

I think there are range limitations for ground support missions . . . . 6, 8 hexes? Experience may have an effect as well. This could also be completely wrong.

Morale shouldn't be a problem. They haven't ever flown a mission other than search and ASW. Unless boredom. I know I would be.
Range on ground support might be it. I'll check this evening. Don't think I'll have enough time at noon; I may not return if I open the game.
Couldn't be the weather, not for three weeks at four different bases; Townsville, Charter Towers, Suva & Savii.
Experience? Not a single mission flown. I dunno.
Well this gives me a couple of things to look into. It is frustrating though. Twin engine bombers in the CBI are flying assigned missions
just fine.
But the southwest Pacific B-17's... grrrrrrrrrr.
To bad I don't have a base close enough for B-26's or A-20's, that could tell alot. About another week for those bases to be up and ready.

Thanks boys,

Also check the commanders attributes, especially the aggression rating.
If the the air superiority value for the Japanese over the base is high and Funafuti has CAP this could be a reason.
Some heavy bomber squads initially have leaders with agg in the low 30s.

But LoBaron, even if air superiority value was established as high, wouldn't the mission go ahead on the ops report and simply say aborted? It would report the attempt at a mission even if none carried out...I think...

No. Such missions simply never get off the ground and hence don't appear in the ops report.

i've had this happen several times - 4E rons will go on vacation. Try standing them down, then re-set the mission.

Wow, could it be that simple. Fingers crossed.
We'll find out tonight. Or will I be dashed to bit on the jagged rocks below. Stay tuned to this thread.

Things that will affect bomber missions:

- Weather - weather over the target, weather over the launching base, or both
- Supplies - supplies should be in the "black"
- Commander aggressiveness combined with "Air" skill - higher is better
- Pilot experience - higher is better
- The presence of an Air HQ at the base - make certain that it has an aggressive Air Commander with a good "Air" rating
- Air Base size - the bigger, the better
- Recon - Recon in advance with your 4Es
- Sacrificing virgins

Sometimes, if you set some fighters to "Escort", even though they won't have the range, your bombers will miraculously fly

The Game Engine is related to photocopy machines - it has an "importance" sensor - the more important the flight, the less likely that it will go

The long and short of it is - if you are depending upon Bombing Missions to save your bacon, you need to come up with a more substantial plan.

Good luck -

Excellent. Good things ponder. No bombers are just to help. Carrier and Surface units are a few days out. So I bring this up now. But this has been going on for three or more weeks since the first landings. And at several other bases in theatre. The Hornet has been helping cripple the Japanese air efforts. And with very good results if I might add. But it is time for her to head back to Pearl to replenish and refit.
BTW; anyone have a virgin I might borrow. I'll get her back as soon as I'm finished. Ooo. Bad dog! Bad dog!

And it appears aggressiveness was the problem. Range was not. The first mission came from Townsville. I think 12 hexes out from Port Morseby. No damage yet but they are punching back. Only a few days before naval support arrives and then hopefully push in some reinforcements to bolster the dense of Port Morseby.
This is all good. Thanks for all the help boys.

Good it worked.

dr.hal, what you are maybe referring to is the "unescorted bombers withdraw" message. This also is influenced by agg rating,
but only applies to medium/light bombers without escort who already passed the dice rolls for the mission to take place previousely.

All attacks though have a dice roll including commander agg rating when the game engine verifies which squads - if any - will fly an
attack against a guarded enemy base and if that fails, as Alfred already explained, there is no message because there is no mission.
