Something low-priced and set in WWI?

I have found seen a game named Great War Salvo!. Has anyone played it? Is it worth buying?

Thanks for the recommendation. It looks quite interesting. It's too expensive for me at the moment, though.

I meant solitaire boardgames that would cost up to 20$ with postal.
I have found this but I have no idea whenever it's good or not. I have never heard about that company and I don't know much about solitaire wargames.

Perturabo, I recommend you Seekrieg, the most realistic simulation of naval surface combat ever designed for miniatures, but you can play also with counters. Almost all naval wargames are very solitaire friendly.

Can't really vouche for any of the above, just thought I would put in a few links. All from NWS site, look around you may find several more from various companies.

To Erik's post: I can completely vouch for Warship Combat.  I purchased it a couple years ago, and it is by far the best $30 dollars you will spend on a tactical naval combat game.  Possible the best $30 dollars you will spend on a game period.  It's not difficult to learn, endlessly re-playable and has an AI that is quite up to task.  And, outside of any of the Matrix games, you will not find a crew that is better at regular updates.  Good stuff.

I might also recommend Battleship Chess.  You will laugh when you first see it.  But also a great little gem.  Should be about $10 dollars to download now.  I bought this to play with my daughter a few years ago (she thought the ships were cute).  We had a lot of fun playing it together and it provides a solid single player experience as well.  The AI is surprisingly good.

All in all I have always felt that pure naval combat was a genre that is under appreciated in the PC gaming world.  Some good table top stuff though.  Dan Verssen Games "www.dvg.com" has a great card game (a bunch of them as a matter of fact) well worth checking out.

Regards,
MJ

I downloaded Seekrieg 4 from their site but it doesn't have solitaire rules or any scenarios.

Hmm...
I wonder if it would be possible to run it on Wine. It would be nice if niche game developers would test their games on it and would write if it can be played and what Wine version is the best.

I wonder why.

I haven't played these naval rules, but I have played the starship ones from the company and I like them. I get the feeling that the naval rules may not be crunchy enough for some historical detail types, but in general I think they make nice games. With electronic download you can get the rules and a scenario book for $20

The only WW1 board (or in this case more accurately card) game with solitaire rules that I'm aware of is The Kaiser's Pirates http://www.gmtgames.com/p-226-the-kaisers-pirates.aspx it is however more than double your budget, very good game though.

They seem to be 2+ players, though.

A card wargame? How does it work? Is it realistic?

Anyway, I have bought the Great War Salvo! game as it seemed to be the least expensive and is a solitaire game.

I'll probably get the Warship Combat later.

Minden Games has been around forever... they're most famous for Panzerschreck (periodical) and "Retro" (simplified ASL rules).

Does anyone know if the WARSHIP COMBAT NAVIES AT WAR game works under Wine? I can't find any test results for it.

Damn, I bought it and I can't run it neither on Wine nor on a virtual machine with WindowsXP and DX9. I get a "unable to create 3d scene" error.

Ummm..

Do you not have a partition with Windows on it?

Or are you one of those Apple die-hards?

I moved to Linux when my old copy of Windows98 refused to work with my new comp (a 6 year old used comp that I bought for 70$).

I'm installing Win98 on VMWare and I'll see if it will run on it. If I'm lucky I'll be playing it and WPO tomorrow. Anyway, I just had to restart the installation nth time because of some problems.
Now I have to input the keycode again, put in the win95 disk again, etc.
Microsoft has so obnoxious and user unfriendly installers.

If you are having trouble running DOS games try to using D-Fend (http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/).  This is great for running old games like Master of Orion, Colonization, etc.

Damn, it turned out that it doesn't want to work even on virtual machine. Luckily it doesn't have any intrusive DRM, so I could run it from pendrive at school.
I think now I understand why tactical naval wargames aren't very popular XD .

Great War Salvo! turned out to be pretty nice, though there's not much gameplay. It's a very dice-heavy game and mainly for ship against ship combat. It's pretty fun, though. I wish they'd make a pre-dreadnought era expansion for it.
