It's not called the Ring of Fire for nothing! A lot of techtonic plate movement goes on all around the Pacifc Ocean rim. Anywhere you see a trench, you have one plate subducting (going under) another. When you have that much crust in contact with each other, there will be earthquakes and volcanos. Sumatra, Japan, New Calidonia, California, San Cristobol, and Christchurch are all examples of this form of plate techtonics.
