I live just outside DC in Northern Virginia... Depending on the day and time, I may be able to do something.

Yes , I know Alexandria very, very well. I've lived nearly 9 out of the past 15 years there. Cafe Rustico for a beer maybe? Or one of the many, many pubs in Old Town?

I'm going to Stamford, NY on Saturday - will stay a week before moving on to Houston for 2 more weeks.
Planning to see the Intrepid, Yorktown and maybe the USS Texas as well as an airfield museum and maybe take a flight in a warbird in the Houston area
- Let me know if anyone's interested and located nearby

Did you PM Nikademus? He's not been around in a bit so he might be on his way to Houston.

I'm glad you are back, but sorry to hear you are somewhat under the weather. Get well. I'm sure I'll be back in the next year or two, so lets give it a rain check.

No I haven't; thought I might see him around but I can drop him a line!

I'm counting my blessings and want to go for a ride in a warbird..a 2 seat Mustang is on the top of my list
Also found that its possible to book flights in a Dauntless dive bomber, B-17, B-24 and B-29
- The grin will become permanently plastered to my face..

I'm in Charlottesville as well.

I'm also Chickenboy's "other" PBEM campaign opponent. We met in Northern Virginia for dinner last night and had a good time.

Then we definately need to get together for a beer or three. How about a "Charlottesville summit?" Any good ideas for places? I'll nominate the "Horse and hound". Anybody else interested?

I will mention the nearby Wild Wing Cafe as it is a personal favorite and a reminder of our mutual opponent Chickenboy.

But I'll cheerfully go with the Horsey Hounds.

That's the one near the Barracks road shopping center? Just down from the UVA law school? That works for me.

The one at Barracks Road is Buffalo Wild Wings. Wild Wing Cafe is next to the Amtrak train station on Main Street.

Is The Virginian still across the street from the rotunda?

I haven't been to C-ville in 25 years, so the places I remember may not still exist - but this is Virginia we are talking about, a state which resists change!

I was there four years ago, and I think the Virginian is gone. The Corner looked very different than I remembered. Don't recall there being a Poe's anymore, and every place seemed to be serving bean sprouts.

OTOH, the White Spot was still cranking out Gusburgers, although the hunchbacked guy wasn't making the fries anymore.

Yeah. Their "Three longnecks for a buck" promotion was a key attraction on non-fraternity nights. A cheap date destination as it were.

We ate in a bar/restaurant about where Poe's should have been, so I think the space is still in use, but the name is diferent, and the menu was very "California girl chic" versus the grease.

I was a huge devotee of the White Spot (I liked to watch the Med Schoolers and the residents on 100-hour shifts try to stay awake during their 15 minute Gusburger breaks.) It was the place to go after the frat parties ended at 0200. A Gus and fries before bed and it was possible to be up and studying by 1000. I was young, once.

I'm pretty sure the Virginian is still there, I went to it a year ago. Maybe a different one , or it moved to a different location. Here is the link to it's site. Maybe you can tell if it's the same one. http://www.virginianrestaurant.com/thevirginian/

I'll be hornswoggled! That's the place where we ate four years ago. I thought it had changed its name. We sat in a booth about midway.

In college I only went in there once, didn't eat. It was the HQ of a lot of post-hippie-era LSD-using, Asleep at the Wheel-listening 7-year-plan undergrads. Poe's was a couple of doors down, a bar more than a restaurant, and I went there when I wasn't drinking at the frat house. I remember The Virginian as being more bar than restaurant, but it's definitely the latter these days.

Thanks for the link. Good memories.

Hi all,
Interesting to hear that quite a few witp players are in Charlottesville or visiting. Could people tell more about their link to C'ville or its university ? I was a graduate student there 20 years ago (GSEAS) and go back occasionally, for consulting or as visitor. I am now in Europe with a faculty position in the field of... AI, games and simulation (!)
Cheers,
Vincent
