Hi

This is my first Grand Campaign pbem, I’ve previously played two times against the AI until March 42, mainly to learn game mechanics and form a Japanese strategy. I am currently playing the Japanese in a Guadalcanal pbem and wining (so far). I hope my learning will continue through this game, but I also hope to win . My opponent Sdhundt is an experienced Allied player, so I expect much more resistance than what the AI offered me until now.

Comments, criticism, advice are more than welcome.

STRATEGIC AIM:
1. Wage war for as long as possible, as far from Japan as possible. In plain words, secure the SRA and establish a defensive perimeter in order to:
a. Allow my merchant navy to move oil and resources from the SRA to the Home Islands unhindered.
b. Prevent the strategic bombing of the Home Islands.

2. Engineer a decisive battle in ’42, somewhere in central/southeast Pacific. If I can’t get one on my terms before ‘43, I will preserve my CVs to defend the Empire. I will keep them in reserve, while attriting the USN by aerial means, until they get to the vital parts of the Empire. But it’s too early to talk about defense at this point.

Phase-1:

DEI - two schwerpunkts.:
The first one based in Indochina and directed towards Palembang. I don’t need Singapore to take Palembang, I only want to contain it, the Allied forces already in Malaya must stay in Malaya. Kuching and Singawang must be taken before the push to Palembang occurs. 4.Division, reinforced by several smaller units, will be used for this operation, I think it will be enough to take it, if I launch it early (probably late December/early January).
If anyone is interested, please read Nemo’s AAR. I dread an Allied fortress in Southern Sumatra and although I don’t know if my opponent will adopt such a strategy, I must assume the worst. In any case, Palembang would feature very high up in my list of objectives anyway.

The second schwerpunkt (a reinforced 16th Army) will be based in Badeldaob and directed towards Java. Ambon, Manado, Ternate, Kendari, Koepang, Denpasar wil be taken in successive invasions before I land a strong force in Java (probably Semarang, we’ll see). This move will also allow me to establish Netty coverage in the area, in order to:
a) support the invasion of Java (duh…),
b) blockade Philippines and southeastern DEI ,
c) secure the left flank of my advance to Java,
d) deny bases to my opponent - Timor Sea bases are suitable to launch a counterattack in the DEI. And
e) use these bases to launch a possible Phase-2 offensive on northern Australia. I am thinking of Darwin (base denial) and Broome/Derby (B17s can bomb Java if based here).

Baby KB and the entire Japanese Battle Line (1st Fleet) will support operations in this theater.

Malaya:

The 25th Army is responsible for capturing Malaya. I am in no hurry to take Singapore, I think I can safely land in Southern Sumatra, providing of course I launch the operation early under air coverage from Singawang and Kuantan.
18 Div will land in Kota Bahru, 56 Div will land in Kuantan and will try to cut off Allied forces retreating from the north, 5 Div will land in Singora and try to work its way south to Singapore.

Philippines:

Only the 14th Army will be committed. I won’t weaken my SRA offensive just to take Manilla. Of course, it would be nice to have an extra army in the DEI, but I think if I move quickly and decisively, it won’t be needed.
The 21st and 23rd Air Flotillas will launch a surprise attack on December 7th, mainly targeting submarines. Except the Appari/Vigan landings, I will also land in San Fernando and fight my way to Clark Field or Manilla, depending on where he will decide to make his final stand. Atimonan is also to be invaded by the forces that historically invaded Legaspi.

Southeast Pacific:
I intent to capture Rabaul and Port Moresby in late December/early January and firmly establish myself in the general area in order to:
a) Prepare for a possible Phase-2 push to Numea/Fiji s (a purely theoretical concept at this stage)
b) Interdict Allied efforts to resupply Australia
c) Create a buffer zone to defend the empire (this is the main purpose of this move as far as I am concerned)
d) If possible, create a CV battle in the area, perhaps during the theoretical push towards Numea/Fijis or even earlier.

KB will initially spend most of its time supporting operations in this area. I may redeploy one or two carriers to operate with baby KB in the DEI.

Central Pacific:
Adopt a purely defensive stance. Reinforce the 24th Air Flottilla (mainly with patrol planes), based in Kwajalein. Wake is to be captured of course, with the help of KB returning from Pearl Harbor.

North Pacific:
Adopt a purely defensive stance. Reinforce the Kurilles. Patrol planes, 12 Mutsuki class DDs, two Ro Class SSs, and part of 12th Air Flottilla will defend the area. Around February, I might buy out a weak division from Kwantung Army , if I can spare the PPs. I also need eyes in Marcus Island to watch the dreaded “northern route”. In Phase-2, I might attack the Alleutans.

China – Advance Carefully:
Initially, I will sort out my garrisons and when the main body (1st, 11th, 12th, 13th Armies) is concentrated I will carefully push forward. My first target is Sian and establishing a defensive line behind a river from Sian to Hankow. I will then sort out my left flank (Canton-Kanhsien-Nanchang). And finally, I will try to take Changsha.
This plan can very well go straight to the bin after a few weeks, since I regard the Chinese capable of launching their own offensives later in the game, if they sort out their supply woes.
In any case, this theater will fight with what it’s already got in its hands. I will transfer some arty units from the Kwantung Army later.

Burma:
Pretty much the same here. Only the 15th Army will fight here. Depending on what the Allies commit in this theater, I will push for Rangoon or defend at Mulmein. If they seriously want to defend the area, I will not risk destruction of my forces, until they get enough reinforcements later on. If I don’t run into trouble in Southern Sumatra, I will redeploy the Imperial Guards Division. As more and more of the SRA is secured, I will progressively move my forces to this theater. By August ’42, I want to have at least 5 divisions and all my armor here, with the 3rd Ari Div in support.

Boy, the firs turn took me 4 days to complete. It’s certain that I’ve made a mistake somewhere, despite checking and rechecking before I sent the turn to Steven.
Several items in my checklist:

- I took care of China garrisons in order to release frontline units.

- I started moving my merchant fleet around to create convoys, which will feed my industry with resources and oil. Here is the convoy list (which btw is stolen from Mike Scholli’s AAR :D). Adjustments will be made if necessary.

Shikuka - Nigata: 3x TK Type 1 TS
Toyohara - Toyama: 12x AKL Kasu-D
Toyohara - Toyama: 7x AKL Ehime Cargo
Toyohara - Toyama: 6x AKL Akasi Cargo
Toyohara - Toyama: 3x AKL Akasi Cargo
Toyohara - Toyama: 12x AKL Kasu-D
Hakodate - Onimato 12x xAK Aden Cargo
Sapporo - Hirosaki: 16x xAK Akasi Cargo
Kushiro - Sendai: 11x xAKL Miyati Cargo
Kushiro - Sendai: 11x xAKL Miyati Cargo
Kushiro - Sendai: 11x xAKL Miyati Cargo
Matsuyama - Tokuyama 10x AK Gozan Cargo
Takamatsu - Kobe: 9x xAK Aden Cargo
Nagasaki - Simonoseki: 9x xAK Aden Cargo
Fukuoka - Simonoseki: 33x AKL Daigen Cargo
Port Arthur -Simonoseki:12x xAK Aden Cargo
Fusan - Simonoseki: 4x AK Gozan Cargo
Keijo - Simonoseki: 9x xAK Aden Cargo
Chinnampo - Simonoseki: 9x xAK Aden Cargo
Tsingtao - Simonoseki: 9x xAK Aden Cargo
Haichow - Simonoseki: 9x xAK Aden Cargo
Shangai - Simonoseki: 9x xAK Aden Cargo

- 1st and 2nd Air Divisions are ordered to start intensive training programs for their pilots. The best pilots are transfer to TRACOM or crack frontline formations.

- Reshuffling IJN. I will present a detailed OOB if I am asked.

- Setting up a/c production:
IJNAF:
100 A6M2 Zeros
30 B5N2 Kate
25 D3A1 Val
30 G3M2 Nell
35 G4M1 Betty
10 H6K4 Mavis
27 E13A1 Jake
10 L3Y2 Tina

IJAAF:
45 Ki-27b Nate ( to be switched off, when enough Oscars are produced to upgrade my units)
50 Ki-43-Ic Oscars
25 Ki-21-IIa Sally
34 Ki-48-Ib Lilly (to be switched off when enough Sallys are produced to upgrade my units)
10 Ki-57-I Topsy
15 Ki-46- II Dinah

396 aircraft in total. Too few but I will increase my production gradually, on a need to have basis.

- R&D
I will try to maintain only one or two types of aircraft per category, i.e. one IJN fighter, one IJA level bomber and so on. Briefly:

IJN fighter: Zero and George only
IJN level bomber: Betty, but the Nell is also researched because the next Betty upgrade is in ’44.
IJN Dive Bomber: I will initially upgrade to D3A2 Val, but Jill will be my main dive bomber after April ‘43.
IJN Torpedo Bomber: Jill of course
IJN Patrol: Emily
IJN Float Plane: Norm
IJN Transport: Emily and Betty in ‘44

IJA fighter: Tojo, Frank and Nick
IJA bomber: Helen (and Peggy later on)
IJA Transport: Topsy
IJA Recon: Dinah

- Facilities expansion
Onimato will expant its port to serve as a base for the 5th Fleet.
The Kurilles will expand once I ship engineers there.
Truk to expand to post size 7
Badeldaob to expand airfield to 7
Port expansion in several HI bases, to improve loading/unloading time of my resource convoys.

- Heavy industry and Naval Shipyard expansion:
Very sporadic. I like even numbers :D, so a few small expansions here and there…I also changed some armament production to vehicles.

Enough with the details. Now I am just waiting for Sdhundt to send his turn.

Don't neglect the G3M3 Nell. It has superb range and gets a radar in 1945. Useful for search and/or night torpedo attacks.

Also, the Oscar is a much more useful plane than most think. Tojos and Tonies don't have good range for offensive actions.

Thanks for the advice! I gave much thought to the Oscar vs Tojo debate and I change my mind 3459 times, before I finally went with the Tojo. Still I will keep a few Oscar groups around. I just won't spend any r&d effort on them, it's too late to change that now.

Don't forget your pilot training program. I usually move pilots in restricted units in Japan to the General Reserve and fill the units with green replacements, then train them at 100% in a skill apropriate to that unit until they achieve 50 Experience and 70 Skill. (A very tedious process). Good luck!

With PDU on, I do not upgrade to the D3A2.  You lose a hex in range.

Good Luck!!

Thanks guys, pilot program is underway witp1951, I moved the 80+ pilots in tracom and the 70+ pilots in frontline units.
Paxmondo, you got me thinking, we'll see when the time to upgrade comes.

I will post the repost for the first term shortly. I don't know what format to write this AAR in. Probably the classic one, i.e. posting the combat report with my comments in bold letters.

I don't think it's the best PH attack ever. I lost 30 pilots, Kates were mauled by flak.
The result was no BB sunk, according to my intel, but several heavily damaged. PH repair
yard can only service three of these monsters, the rest have to wait until these three
finish or risk a journey to the west coast.

Ryujo is sent to hit the port of Tarakan. Seeing three Cas fleeing south,
maybe I should have set my Kates to naval attack. Anyway, my thinking was
to take advantage of the magic move and position my CVL where it can hit
allied shipr fleeing from Manilla.

Poor torps only affects the USN.  The Brit and Dutch boats have good torps ...

Good luck and welcome to AE PBEM. Very well written and thought out. I would abandon the DD bombardment strategy, but it's understandable to take max advantage of Turn 1 surprise if house rules allow it. I would also strongly recommend increasing Oscar production to about 75 per month. You have a lot of Nate groups to upgrade.

I am going to echo Criptop's suggestion to increase Ki-43-Ic production. Considering you'll want to upgrade as many Nate units as possible as early as possible, 50 a month just won't cut it. Considering you'll need almost a month's production to upgrade one Sentai, it won't be until the Tojo IIa comes online in September before you'll have your Nate's all upgraded . Factor in combat losses as well and you'll be woefully short.

Resource movement has changed somewhat since Mike did his first TF compiling so you'll learn you can concentrate on far fewer bases to get enough resources to the Home Islands as you play. Mike's suggestions are a great starting point for sure! Let the game engine move what it can for you without risking transports and using excess fuel. Hakodate on Hokkaido is a great port to expand and will collect enough resources to keep your transport TF's humming without the need to base out of Sapporo for example. Just ship resources and oil from Shikuka and resources from Toyohara to the northern most base on Hokkaido and it will migrate down to Hakodate saving you burning excess fuel and turn around time. Just make sure to expand your hub ports to draw the resources and oil to them and keep the transports from backing up waiting to load/unload. Also, I find Hokkaido needs to have fuel actually shipped to it regulary to keep the HI there producing otherwise they always show "not enough fuel" warnings and produce nothing. Sending a few 1250 capacity tankers from Ominato on a regular basis does the trick.

My best advice is be aggressive. Take the fight to the Allies. Don't waste 1942 when you can dictate events and shape the game to your strategic goals. It's a lesson I wish I'd have learned a lot sooner. Good luck...Banzai!

Thanks, Cribtop. You are right, I need more Oscars immediately, Nates are death traps.

That's a great piece of advice! Saves a lot of fuel and effort. I wish I knew that earlier. Thanks! I will expand Hakodate. Wakanai, the northenmost port in Hakodate is size 3, I probably need to increase that as well. Does the same logic apply in China/Korea too? If Fusan is developed to be the best port in China/Korea, will it draw all excess resources there?

OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR Dec 08, 41

Central Pacific:

- I considered a second strike on Pearl Harbor, but the 300 allied aircraft scared me away.
KB makes for Wake Island to protect the two invasion TFs currently sitting in Kwajalein.

- BB West Virginia, CA San Fransisco and CL Helena are reported sunk.

- As I feared, the 4 DDs that bombarded Midway were cought by Enterprise, which was returning from Wake.
1 DD is lost, 1 is severly damaged, the other two remained untouched.

Allied aircraft
F2A-3 Buffalo x 10
SB2U-3 Vindicator x 17
SBD-2 Dauntless x 17
SBD-3 Dauntless x 17
TBD-1 Devastator x 12
Japanese Ships
DD Ariake, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Yugure, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires
DD Shigure
DD Shiratsuyu

- Task Force 20, transporting the 144th Infantry Regiment, is slowly making its way to Truk. It will wait for
KB and then invade Rabaul. I sent subs to watch the straights in New Britain and so far no allied transports
were seen heading to Rabaul, which means that one infantry regiment should be enough to take it.
In any case, 90th Infantry Regiment in Rashin is preparing for Rabaul as well.
The Guards Brigade in Tokyo is preparing for Port Moresby.

Malaya:

- 18th and 5th divisions are unloading at Kota Bahru and Patani respectively. 56 division, destined to attack
Kuantan, is still a long way from its target. Vildebeests and Hudsons attack my TFs in Kota Bahru. Nates
are capping them but they are useless. I will set a few Oscars to LRCAP them as well. Despite using drop tanks
they should be better than Nates.

- 3rd Air Division strikes at Kota Bharu, Georgetwon and Alo Star airfileds, 3 Blenheims are destroyed.

- 21st Air Flottilla is hit hard, thanks to my mistake. I forgot two Nell groups with orders from the first turn to hit
Singapore. They flew in unescorted and no less than 48 Blenheims took off to meet them. It was a slaughter.
I lost 20 Nells. :(

Borneo:

- TF 105 begins its trip from Cam Ranch Bay to Miri to unload an infantry battalion.

If Fusan is developed to be the best port in China/Korea, will it draw all excess resources there?

Yes, and if you clear the RR from Singapore, you can draw all the way from there ....

Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
Sasebo 1st SNLF

Defending units:
Manado Garrison Battalion
Manado Base Force
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The problem is that Forze Z was spotted near Kendari heading northeast towards Manado
and another small allied TF probabl containing a DD is 8-10 hexes northeast of Manado.
The good news is that I now have a battleship division baby KB in Badeldaob. I order them
to run with full speed and position themselves southeast of Manado. Baby KB will attack Forze Z and the BBs will finish off the remnants.

Eastern DEI:

A very interesting situation has developed in the Eastern DEI with the appearance of Force Z since the last turn.
You can see in the screenshots the positions of the various taskforces. In this turn, his destroyers near Jolo
attacked one of my invasion taskforces which didn not manage to withdraw to Jolo in time. I lost half of it,
along with 1/3 of a naval guard unit, the other half severely damaged and still containing.
The Kendari Taskforce has unloaded in Jolo successfully. I have 1 CL and 6 DDs coming from the north, they should be there already but I forgot to set them to full speed.

Further south, Force Z headed straight to Ambon, instead of northeast that my intel told me last turn.
But my transports have already unloaded troops and supplies to Ambon and i now have numerically superiority. I ordered
them to shock attack and it should be mine in the next turn. I have Nells and Zeros ready to step in. Betties based in Badeldaob
have Forze Z in their range, but they failed to fly, I can't tell why. I hope they will do so in the next turn.
Also of note, he managed to reinforce Manado, not significantly but maybe enough to beat the SNFL I put there.
He probably has a few DD near Manado heading southeast towards baby KB, which he cannot see. I don't want a surface battle, I want my CVLs to hit Forze Z, while being protected by Tanaka.

I will probably lose some destroyers and transports
next turn, but I hope to have eliminated Force Z and thus gained control of Timor and Celebes Seas. He managed so far to delay the invasions of Manado, Ternate and Kendari.

So far he is kicking my butt, but I half expected it. Most of these losses were perfectly avoidable. Used to play against the AI, I recklessly sent invasion TFs without adequate cover. Still, my plans are not thwarted yet, I simply have to be more careful from now on.

I am too busy playing the game to update this AAR. We chunk out two turns a day and we now reached December 20th, so I will try to summarize the most important events of the past 5 turns.

SRA:

It seems that things are going better for the Japanese compared to the first 10 days of the war, when I lost 10 destroyers and 3 invasion taskforces were trashed, thankfully they were empty. I don't care much about the transports and my plans were not delayed significantly. I took Ambon and Singawang, which were my primary initial targets. I also sunk PoW and damaged Repulse, which I suspect is being repaired in Sorebaya.

Betties based in Ambon and Singawang are now covering the entire SRA and hopefully all allied naval movement will be stopped. I shipped two air HQs to provide them with torpedoes. I even launched a port strike on Darwin, which had no fighters. I also see no fighters in Palembang, only 25 bombers and some auxiliary. I will trust my intel and launch another port strike on Palembang, we 'll see how it goes.

4th Division is loaded in a mighty invasion fleet and heading to Saigon and from there to Palembang, along with two additional minor invasion flotillas. It's still near Okinawa.

Central Pacific:

- Wake Island fell two turns ago, but its CD guns caused some distress, sinking an AMC and damaging two PBs.
KB returned to Truk and spent two days topping up in fuel, torpedoes, sorties, aircraft and pilots. I sent CV Shokaku to merge with baby KB in the DEI. CV Zuikaku will follow her after she repairs her damage (now 21\8\25).
It will take about 35 days, including the return journey to Kure, to be back in action.

- An invasion fleet has just left Truk and is heading to Rabaul, carrying 144th Inf. Regiment, a SNFL and a base force. Kavieng, Shortlands and Madangs will be invaded simultaneously.
Guards Brigade was also loaded in tranports a few turns ago and is now near Saipan. It's destined to invade port Moresby.
My subs have infested the Solomon Sea. No sign of enemy efforts to reinforce Rabaul or Port Moresby.

Malaya:

- 56th div has finally completed the long journey from the Home Islands to Saigon. The TF carrying it had some very slow transports in it. I made the appropriate arrangements and the invasion of Kuantan is ready to be launched.
I briefly contemplated invading Mersing, but I feared that one division would not be enough if the enemy decided to move his force from Sinagpore north without me being able to reinforce the beachhead.

- 18th div is slowly marching southwest from Kota Bahru, but it's taking forever to move a hex.

- 5th div has reached Alo Star and will attak it next turn. There are some 11000 allied troops in it. I have occupied the surrounding hexes, will that make them more willing to enter my pow camps?
The enemy tried to sneak some AKs and APS into Georgetown, but they are trashed by Betties.

Philippines:

- I took Lingayen and I am moving forces around to take Iba and Cabantuan, which are both empty. The enemy still has 19000 troops in Manilla and 5000 in Bataan, but most of his forces are in Clark Field. I am preparing the entire 14th army for Clark Field.

- There is no allied CAP over Clark Field or Manilla, but my intel is showing that there are still 200 allied aircraft there, an inflated figure for sure, because my airfield attacks don't manage to destroy more than 1 airplane. Now that 3rd division is in Luzon, I hope my airfield attacks will be more effective.

North Pacific:

- Paramushiro-Jima is reinforced with a base force, mined and its forts built up. I want to do the same for Onekotan-Jima, Shimushiri-Jima and Etorufu, but it will take some time and some PPs to buy out engineers to do the job.
Question: if I buy a regiment off Kwantung Army and change its HQ to 27th Army, which is also restricted, will I be able to load it into transports?

- Marcus Island needs a few Mavis but there is none to spare. What people usually do in this case? Leave it completely empty? I really need to watch the "northern route". Perhaps I will move a base force here to offer some protection. The Japanese receive their first Mavis group in April, iirc. I need at least two to create overlapping search arcs from the Kurilles to the Gilberts.

China:

Reshuffling forces to release as much AV as possible is almost done. The Chinese are withdrawing but I am not too eager to chase them yet. A few battles here and there but nothing major yet. I chose to withdraw form Ichang but the enemy did not occupy it, resulting in the loss of 3 VPs. I send 20 AV to garrison and still the Chinese are content to stay put. Most of the action takes place in Manchukuo by the Mongol Army. It has cleared the road leading to Paoting, driving the chinese to rough terrain. 1st Army is ready to move. Its first targets are Tsiantso, Loyang and Chengchow, which are defended by some 120000 Chinese. I can't move to Sian while having them in my left flank.

Looks great. I am still deciding if I want to start a Jap campaign. Never have- the production system seems to be a bit much. You asked about moving a unit in China to another HQ that is restricted. If it has a restricted HQ I don't belive you can load it up and move it. Let a more experienced player answer that... someone surely will.

Enjoying so far.

Thanks, Jeff, I 'm glad that at least one person is enjoying my AAR

The tracker is a big help in dealing with the Japanese economy. I wish there was a tutorial, but after a while you can get quite useful info from it. I just learned that China/Manchuria/Korea is short of 60 tons of oil daily, and that Formosa produces 80. I can ship that oil to Shanghai. 60 will be used by local refineries and the rest of it will eventually accumulate in Fusan.

Also, Honshu has just 28 days of resources left before its HI stalls. It needs 110k daily and I am shipping over 200k, so I should be ok.
