This is just insane:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-A0NDsPcZY

I think I saw a few good sized houses, in flames, moving at what looked like 30 MPH. God I hope that's a sparsely populated part of Japan.

That is quite an horrific piece of footage. To see that wall of water so immense and so powerful heading, unstoppable, crushing all before it, toward the motorway with all the cars going past is just terrible...

The amount of debris already collected by the wave too....this is bad .

Been a crazy year http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.html

We've just had a Japanese SandR team out here for our quake. they flew home yesterday. I hope we have something left to aid them

There are no sparsely populated areas of Japan. That's the problem.

Yes, my thoughts go out to the people in Japan.   Hopefully the waves heading to Hawaii and the west coast don't cause much damage.

This one hit hard for sure, woke up this morning and see a tidal wave just destroying everything (live on CNN). They have the most sophisticated early warning system on this planet... and it *still* didn't do much good. Too fast to react.
Some time ago New Zealand and now this, bad bad bad.

OMG! If you look close, you can see people in cars trying to get away, they don't seem to make it. Prayers for the whole pacific rim. Earth changes are here!

Seeing those cars trying to get out of town in a hopeless effort to outrun the wall of water is heartbreaking. The odds of those people surviving would have to be extremely slim. Our thoughts go out to our Japanese friends.

That seems to be about the only bit of good news; things weren't anywhere near as bad as it was feared they might be elsewhere across the Pacific.

No so sure about the cars... most of them seemed to make it as far as I could see. Maybe I'm just an optimist. You can't help thinking yourself in their place though, what must it have been like to be the guy you can see doing a three point turn, or the one driving INTO town late on in the vid clearly unaware of what was happening.

THIS is alarming, too. OK, the Japanese are a lot more 'open' than the Soviets were, and their reactors much better designed but...

quote:

Japanese authorities have warned there could be a small radiation leak from a nuclear reactor whose cooling system was knocked out by the earthquake. Technicians at the Fukushima Daiichi plant are set to release vapour from the unit in question to lower the pressure and prevent a meltdown. This carries a risk that a "small" amount of radioactive material could leak, officials say.

Around 3,000 people have been evacuated from the surrounding area. These are residents who were within a 3km (1.86 miles) radius of the plant. But early on Saturday morning, local time, people living within 10km (6.2 miles) of the plant were asked to leave.

worryingly familiar?

0828: Japan's NHK TV showing before and after pictures of the Fukushima-Daiichi plant. It appears to show that the outer structure of one of four buildings at the plant is no longer there.

0822: The Associated Press cites Fukushima Prefecture official Masato Abe as saying the cause of the white smoke seen above the plant is still under investigation, and that it's unclear whether there was an explosion.

0810: Japanese media reports say that radioactivity has risen 20-fold outside the Fukushima-Daiichi plant."

BBC

Oh, sh*t.

Edit:

quote:

0857: The BBC's Nick Ravenscroft was on his way towards Fukushima, but about 60km from the plant was stopped by the police and told it was too dangerous to proceed. He says there is lots of traffic coming in the other direction. Authorities in vehicles with sirens are making public announcements to the crowds.

0855: Some pictures have come through now on Japanese TV of that explosion. It looks very strong. You can see debris being blasted from the building, then a cloud of smoke mushrooming up from the plant.

Looking more and more like Chernobyl 2.

KI. Potassium Iodine. During WWII the Japanese made ballon bombs that floated all the way across the Pacific. Launched from northern Japan. Radiation released will track to float over to the Western US and Canada. I think it takes about a 3-5 days. You have to take KI pills so you don't get thyroid cancer from radioactive iodine.

Wrong. It's called Potassium Iodide. (Sorry, I'm taking an AP Chem class and couldn't resist.)

God, the Tsunumi footage is horrible. One of our local newscasters said about that footage of the wave engulfing a city and wrecking buildings that it's something you expect to see in a Hollywood disaster epic like "Deep Impact"...but not in real life.
Hope all the Matrix gamers in Japan are OK.

My thoughts exactly. The video I linked to was something out of Day After Tomorrow or some other natural disaster movie.

Right now they're unofficially declaring the death toll "around 1000" I believe. Frankly that's astonishing given the severity of this event.

Looks like a State of Emergency was just declared at a second nuclear plant, too. Scary stuff.

Everybody...including government officials are saying the death count it going to go much, much, higher.
That figure is probably a rough count of actual bodies accounted for.

Japanese broadcaster NHK says the total number of confirmed deaths caused by the disaster now stands at 1,596.
But police warn that the death toll in Miyagi region alone could top 10,000.
