As the Axis on the first turn, if I bomb the Soviet airfields, I will inflict massive amounts of air losses. But aren´t aircraft lost when I overrun the airfields with ground units as well? Since most of the forward Soviet airfields will be overrun by ground units anyway, is there any point in bombing them or should I assign my planes to ground support instead?

As far as I know only the damaged aircraft will be lost when you force the airbase unit to displace/relocate.

I'd say you can improve on your tally by making ground attacks first.

Ground attacks will bring the Russian aircraft into the air where you can shoot many down (even without ground support ON, your fighters will sortie against incoming enemy aircraft) and, crucially, many more will be damaged just by flying.

Having recce'd extensively, you will know where all Russian airfields are and have det level 10.

As you break through Russian lines, you will have the opportunity to displace airfields. Raid them before you do so, to damage more aircraft. As von Beer says, damaged planes are lost when the airfield is displaced.

Leave raiding airfields that you cannot displace till the end of your turn. Recently I destroyed 5700 on first turn and that was a very poor tally. 6200 is more like it.

Bomb them till the cows come home on Turn 1, starting with the closest airfields; then don't bother after that, unless you spot one absolutely packed with aircraft OR your ground units are going to bump into one - then consider bombing it which will create some damaged aircraft that will be lost when it displaces....and be very careful bombing outside of your fighters range...
