Status: offline 		I'm starting a GC41 as the Ruskies. Looking through my leaders, I don't see Chuikov.

Is he missing from the game or does he arrive later?

He's in China in 41, presumably.

Historically it wasn't formed until May '42. As the Soviet player you can form armies and one of them will be designated the 62nd I'm sure.

OK, thanks. I guess I didn't realize he was in China till then.

I'll save a spot for him to defend my most critical city. Although the way things are going, its looking more likely to be Kiev than Stalingrad right now.

Born into a peasant family in Tula oblast, he joined the Red Army during the Russian Revolution of 1917 and later attended the Frunze Military Academy. Chuikov commanded the 4th Army in the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939, and during the Russo-Finnish War of 1940. He was then sent to China as an advisor to Chiang Kai-shek. In May 1942 the USSR recalled their military advisor, according to Chuikov's memoirs this was due to Nationalist China claiming the USSR was providing military aid as part of an attempt to draw the USSR into the Second Sino-Japanese War

The 62nd Order of Lenin Army
Formed as the 7th Reserve Army as part of the Stavka Reserve in May 1942, the formation was designated as the 62nd Rifle Army the following month. After an epic combat performance in the Battle of Stalingrad, the Army was granted Guards status and renamed the 8th Guards Army in April 1943.

By great combat performance?

The reason I ask is because I noticed 2 units that were guarding the hex NE of Kiev were attacked countless times by the Germans and held every time. And then a few turns later, they were suddenly guard units.

These heroes of Kiev never abandoned their post despite desperate German frontal assaults. One of them is 8-0, the other 8-1. Now they are leading the counterattack to cut the Germans in half at the swamps.

In order for a unit to become a guards unit, the three following conditions must be met:
Condition One:
For non-motorized units, the unit’s number of wins plus the year modifier must be greater or equal to 8 plus random(8).(see glossary for definition of random(x))
For motorized units, the unit’s number of wins plus the year modifier must be greater or equal to 12 plus random(12)
For Corps HQ units, the unit’s number of wins plus the year modifier must be greater or equal to 15 plus random(15)
For Army HQ units, the unit’s number of wins plus the year modifier must be greater or equal to 75 plus random(75)

Condition Two:
For all units, the unit’s number of wins plus the year modifier must be greater than 9

Condition Three:
For all units, the unit’s number of wins plus the year modifier must be greater than 2 plus the unit’s number of losses
Year Modifier: The Year modifier is 3 in 1941, 2 in 1942 and 1 in 1943-45.
