The hit on Portland was so powerful that it took a section of her armor deck and threw it all the way up into the aft 8in guns.

Thats a great point really, ive never been able to visualise how to relate the damage numbers to real ship damage,
cool pics

be fun if some one set out a series of pics for 10, 20, 30 % flotation damage etc

TBH this looks more like 50+ major damage and a hell lot of repaired minor.
A Japanese CA wouldn´t have even come this far.
Everytime I look at such pictures I have to applaud the genius and force of US damage control.

I have a patient whose family told me he was on the New Orleans during Pearl Harbor. I'll have to ask him if he was onboard at Tassafaronga. I hope he can tell me his experiences if he was. He has a bit of Alzheimer's so I'm not sure that he will recall this.
