I've been playing wargames since Kampfgruppe on the C64 and yesterday evening I've finally bought War in the East. The price tag put me off at first but then I'm one of those people who's been ranting for years that I'd gladly pay more for a 'serious' game that doesn't have to cater to the mass market and its need for instant gratification.

Buying, installing and patching was a breeze, then I started up the tutorial. And started reading the manual. Holy mother of Panzerthingies... Now where was that button for "stuff goes boom"?

Let's just say that yesterday I went to bed at 2.30AM. And now it's almost 3AM, but at least I just beat the 'Road to Kiev' scenario. Finally a major victory for the Axis, weeeee!

So many memorable moments: the mad dash by 11th PzDiv to Kiev, Wiking's bold thrust south to seal the pocket around Lvov, LSSAH leading the Romanians to Odessa, 14th Panzer battling through half a dozen red Army division to save a trapped PzKorps at Pervomaysk....

And yes, I have to get up in the morning to work.

Can't praise a game more than that.

Well done!

I was also thinking a lot about the price but on the other hand when you consider the support you get on this forum it is worth of the price. Level of support you get on here is not what most of the companies provide in their forums.

These games WITE and WITP have very dedicated fan base and with good editors it is likely that new scenarios keep coming and this title have something to play on very long time.

Indeed. The community around here seem quite a helpful and friendly bunch. For grognards, that is.

BTW is there an easy way to view aircraft/airbase ranges, especially when it comes to the range of supply drop missions?

Look at the air group and divide the radius by 10 to get the basic range in hexes of the air group's aircraft.

Glad you're enjoying the game! I have one question about pulling the trigger myself. Is this game just for grognards? I am very far from one. Will I still enjoy it?

I was on the border with this but now Im happy with the purchace. Spent many days to 1-2am on a workweek. Its easier to get into and play than say witp yet there is still plenty of detail in it. And the AI way better than in witp. Id say its the best Ive ever seen in a wargame. Im desperately fighting against the Axis AI on Challenging-difficulty.

Im planning to play this together with witp. One week of WITE and then seven days on WTIP. World War Grigsby style.

I am a casual wargamer and enjoy this very much. If you have an interest in the Eastern Front then this is a must own. My only problem with this game is finding enough time to play it (between work, family, etc.). I have no regrets whatsoever about buying this.

It's hard to tell but we were all non-grognards, once (long time ago). Everyone has to have one "First grognard game" in his life and having said that I think WITE could be the ideal game in that role for some players.

You can start playing very fast, clicking counters, and winning battles on easiest setting. WITE is playable that way.

However, in heart, is it a grognard's game, so if you want to master it, you'll have to grognardize yourself

I'd say it depends on what you expect from the game. If you expect a Panzer General game, you'll probably be quickly overwhelmed and then disappointed.

But if you're willing to spend a couple of hours actually learning the game then you'll be rewarded with a fantastic gaming experience.

The AI alone for me was worth the price.

BTW I've done a little AAR here:

Actually you probably would not be overwhelmed if you were expecting Panzer General. Set it to easy, take the Germans and let the AI handle all of the air, DON'T take the "lock" option for Support Units when you select the options at game start (so the AI will handle all the support units automatically) and now you can do a click-fest over-running Russians and conquering all the territory you can before Winter then hunker down and wait for Spring. After a couple of games you will turn into a grognard without realizing it simply by osmosis

This game is not Panzer General by a kilometer. And Its totally different from it, and in my opinion its a better game by a mile.
I'll say this is the best East Front wargame you will find now in your lifetime. Get it and play it before you die. I'm glad I did
And look I'm still alive!
