Startu.ini File Mod - 1/1/2011 2:35:12 AM

The warp speed of the game supposedly can be modified in the <startup.ini> file. Does anyone know what the range of acceptable values is and how they relate to the warp speed in the game. Does it work for all races in the game or just for the "player"? The value in that file at start is 1.6. Is that like a multiplier so that 1.9 would be faster? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks in advance.

Oops. Misspelled file name. See next post for a more coherent question.

I haven't messed with it myself, but I did see in another thread where people were experimenting and it seems the minimum value is 1.0 and higher values give greater speed/range.

There's no need to post another thread on the same subject, you can edit your first post and correct the thread title there.

Thanks. I did try to edit the original post but somehow I screwed that up, so just did it again.

I will mess with the value in the startup.ini file and see what happens. Worst case I can always crash the game, reset the value and try again...

But why did a value for hyperdrivespeed lower than 1.0 don't work ?
It seem like an easy thing to do.
Many people in the forum would like to slow down the speed, not increase it ?

Really? Just recently I've lowered this value to 0.5 and everything seems to be working fine.

can you verify that the hyperspeeds are half the ones when it is set to 1, Caesar? I think it was tried before and no difference was noted

Have you ever tried a negative value?

Oh, I had forgotten this thread! Actually, I play with hyperspeed value set to 0.5, and it does seem to work, although I haven't really tested, comparing to 1.0.

As for a negative value, I have not tried it but should prove interesting, since if it works, then no ship could move, supposedly.
Imagine... the universe at a stand-still... kinda reminds me of MOO2 and the hyperspace blockade due to certain nasty space monsters.

offtopic....that monster would have eaten your ships but not prevent them to use hyperdrive
the hyperspace flux was the one actually preventing you to warp, indeed I requested these as well. But I'm a MOOniac so it's nota surprise

Oh, that was it, the hyperspace flux! (it's been some time since MOO2...)
A truly fun game that I have fond memories. When my empire was gradually reduced
to my home planet and fleets upon fleets (with Doom Stars) attacked me... many a standoff, but finally
bitter defeat But it was fun!

Rarely, though, I did the same thing to my final enemy's home world... A Doom Star "You may fire when ready..."
and .

But I must say that the graphics for the Death Star blast in DW & RoTS, and the destruction of planets is,
shall we say, most satisfying

Hmmm... why yes, I AM rather soft-hearted...

(Actually, even though I tend to have an imperial outlook on the world and the universe,
and even though I love to blow up planets, now and again,
I am really not such a bad fellow, after all! )

Sorry to hack this thread, but I can't seem to find the startup.ini. I need it to change the resolution Distant Worlds starts in...
Would be glad if anyone could a name the directory, I'm searching since 1 hour for the file.
Thanks in advance!

it should be in the game folder itself
for example in my case it's here

D:\Matrix Games\Distant Worlds\Startup.ini

check if you can see system or hidden files, it may be that Windows is not configured to show those files....this is usually the most common problem
and welcome to the community hajimaru

Yes, what Mr. Data says.
And also that this file only appears in DW RoTS,
not the original DW, although I have copied this file
from RoTS and it seems to work in DW.

Good luck... and welcome aboard!

Thanks for the answers guys! I don't have RoTS, so it's just not there. I created a file with the two lines specifying the resolution mentioned earlier but maybe it needs more lines of code to recognize it fully. Maybe I will go for RoTS anyway, because of the slightly bigger fonts. Well size is almost ok now, I just wished the font and/or anti aliasing wouldn't be so bad  It's absolutely important in such a text heavy game and honestly, I just cannot imagine how you all are able to play it without getting eye strain...

Data....you've gotten very close to your 1000th post (Congrats)!

What are your plans for your 1000th?
A. Like Igard, introduce a fantastic new Star Trek mod?
B. Like Igard, drink an overabundance of Romulan Ale?
C. Insert your Emotion Chip and seek out Lt. Yar?
D. Remove your Emotion Chip?
or finally....
E. Come to the Briar Patch and visit (Be sure to bring your
Get out of the 'face-stretching' chair free card)!

thanks ehsumrell1, I'm glad you'll be the topic for my 1001st post and I'm more than glad that you put the Briar Patch visit as the last option (grrr)
That idea with lt Yar is very graphic and starts me thinking of very Emotion Chip like thoughts
I will meet you where you don't have that infernal machine for facial redesign
I think my dear lt Yar's behind would also appreciate the distance from that machine.
