Status: offline 		I held out as long as I could. After years of saying that I'll never have the time to play WitP:AE, I could not resist the nice $53.99 price in the Holiday sale this year.

So, as someone whose top five games of all time includes Uncommon Valor, am I going to be able to jump right in with both feet? Or do I have some manual reading to do?

I'm downloading the 1.01.06i patch right now, so anything else I need at the moment? Any "must have" mods?

Status: offline 		WitP AE is a long time down the road but if you played UV you know the basics.

One suggestion: fire up the Guadalcanal scenario to learn the ropes and you will feel at home at once.

That said, yes, read the manual, the complexity is taken to another level in AEm but so are the improvements in playability and realism.

Status: offline 		All the major stuff is intuitive and in line with history, so you can launch right into a Grand Campaign as the Allies vs. the AI and do very well, if you've a mind to.

Of course, there are twenty zillion "small but critically important things" that you have to find out about and then master to reach top form, but you'll get there. The forums will be your invaluable guide, but to derive maximum benefit you gotta jump in and take some lumps to get a feel for things.

Glad you're here, by the way! WitP:AE offers amazing PBEM competition (though, IMO, the game should be viewed as three-dimensional chess that bears a resemblance - sometimes striking, sometimes fuzzy - to World War II in the Pacific rather than as a simulation of World War II in the Pacific).

Status: offline 		I don't know if this mod is a 'must have' but it's the one I'm using: "Da Big Babes". More small ships, less support: i.e. in vanilla the Americans get tons and tons of support in the Southwest Pacific Theatre via their USA Base Forces, these units are NOT included on this mod.

Completely a must have mod!

Welcome, SW. You also need Tracker (see the sticky thread). It too is invaluable as a game play aid.

Now, the question is how high is your OCD-ness and micromanagement quotient?? Japanese production kept me away for a while in WITP, but like others have said, download Tracker and it becomes a lot easier to manage. Play vs AI to learn and read lots of the threads here to gain information. I have a small collection of cut & paste comments from the threads to remind me.

So say goodbye to your family and friends.

Now, I would really be in great shape if I could get the -f -px1920 –py1200 switch to work with my quick start shortcut. I'll be buggered if I can get it to work! I'm on Win7.

As another UV player, I recommend the wading pool, starting with Coral Sea, then the 'Canal scenario.
