Improving the Computer/AI - Sea Power

Here are some things I've noticed while playing the game that I think would improve the computer AI, in it's use of sea power. Peeking at the computer during the course of testing a custom scenario I've seen all of the computers ML's in port in Truk and a ton of PC's setting in Rabul, yet the computer continues to send groups of unescorted APs to their death.

1. Mine Ops

I have never seen the computer/AI use its mine layers, or conduct sub mine laying ops.Have the computer setup defensive mine fields in it's own ports and use some of its subs to try to mine forward enemy ports. The computer also needs to escort Mine sweepers. In every game I've played I've sunk all of the enemy's MSW's in the first two months of the war.

2. Escorts

In the three complete games I've played as allied it always ends the same way with a turkey shoot starting in Nov/Dec 42 where allied air kills wave after wave of first AP's AG's then CL's and DD's. The computer needs to better mix of TF's and use it's Carriers to escort transports and LRCAP to try to protect transports. Have the computer create TF's with a single AP's instead of a group of 4 AP's. Single ship TF's are harder to spot, attack, and reduce the chance of air attacks finding and attacking single ship TF's. Multiple singe ship TF's will reduces enemy air power, and cause higher fatigue due to higher number of air missions.

3. Carrier Ops

The computer seems to keep all of its carriers in one super group this works well for invasion groups, but later when the computer is trying to hang on, it should use it's carriers to escort re-supply missions to forward bases.

4. Damaged Ships

It seems the computer tries to return damaged ships directly to Truk, but most never make it. I have saved very badly damaged ships by first getting them docked at the nearest port until fires and flooding are under control, the computer/AI should try to do the same.

5. Troop Transport

The game really needs the ability to load just troops, trying to keep troops together (replacements) and rotating troops is important in the long campaigns and is all but impossible even for the human player due to this limitation. I have not no idea if the computer/AI does even tries to rotate troops.

The AI does conduct mine ops. It effectively clears offensive minefields I lay in annoying places (especially harbours) and sometimes lays large amounts of mine in defensive harbour minefields. I just had a BB, 3 DDs, about 5APs and half a dozen AK's all hit mines (uber invasion group of task forces entered shortlands islands - all equipped with MSWs and the still hit a dozen mines).

Only place I've seen the AI mine is Shortlands.

Anyone else?

I think I've seen it clear mines out of Tulagi - but I have to admit when I invaded or bombarded Port Moresby I was surprised not to find a minefield.

The AI also mines Rabaul & Truk (defensively). I think the AI mines the bases it feels are the most important - Truk, Rabaul, & Shortlands. Have yet to see minefields anywhere else, of course I managed to sink most of the Jap minelayers early on, although the fields at Rabaul are pretty dense no matter what.

I've seen the AI mine near ports like Gii Gili and Guadalcanal, one hex away sometimes, with either ML's or subs. My big gripe is when I see Tanaka choose the "Crossing the T" naval battle tactic as that means the Japs are going to use guns instead of torpedoes for the most part. When the battle tactic is surprise or a meeting engagement the Japs do much better as their ships use their torps to great advantage. I'd suggest they change the hard-coding so that Jap naval commanders don't choose "Crossing the T" naval battle tactic unless they're very bad commanders. The good Jap naval commanders should choose some other naval tactic that relies more upon torpedoes if the tf has lots of CA's through DD's.

In one of my Ver1.2 SCN 17 game against the Japanese AI, I took Lae & the base east of it, Fisch... something, I cleared this Fisch... base of mines and for about 3 weeks, the Japanese AI sent Bombardment TFs, Transport TFs to land just 1 regiment (which were subsequently wiped out by my Aussie regiments) and then a minelaying TF to mine my base. I knew it because there is this new mine sign in this Fisch.. base hex. I believe the AI will carry out offensive mining but only nearby enemy bases without too much LBA interdiction. Even then, it could be rare. Anyway, it wasn't effective because I march all the infantry regiments to Lae and left Fisch.. with 3 enginerring unitsand plenty of supplies and the AI mines couldn't hurt my ships. However, I have yet to come across AI submarine mine-laying.

Pad152, I agree the AI need to be adjusted so that it will not send transport or reinforcement TFs without air-cover - something Admirals Turner have practised or R Tanaka would have hoped for but didn't get. Besides, it makes the game almost a walkover for the human player by early 1943.

Computer/AI Mine Ops

Yes, I seen the computer clear mines but never lay them.

The mines in Shortlands are there in the start of the Scen #17, and maybe at other bases the computer starts with, but in three complete games I have yet to see the Computer/AI place mines in or around my ports/bases.

I've also never sunk or attacked a Jap mine layer (ML class) ship.

At the end of the games I found all of the Jap ML's in Truk.

patrickl,
I've seen the AI lay mines with subs and minelayers. Remember you won't see the minefields unless you trip over them. Try watching the AI play itself in scenarios 17 or 19 and you'll be able to more clearly see them laying minefields. Also don't forget that minefields disappear over time so the AI can lay mines and if you don't visit the hex soon after the chances are you won't see the minefields because they've disappeared already. Oh, and that's Finschafen you're talking about. Since Truk and Noumea are the only places where mines can be replenished it's only logical to find them there for the AI side.
