Improving the Computer/AI - Sea Power
Here are some things I've noticed while playing the game that I think would improve the computer AI, in it's use of sea power. Peeking at the computer during the course of testing a custom scenario I've seen all of the computers ML's in port in Truk and a ton of PC's setting in Rabul, yet the computer continues to send groups of unescorted APs to their death.
1. Mine Ops
I have never seen the computer/AI use its mine layers, or conduct sub mine laying ops.Have the computer setup defensive mine fields in it's own ports and use some of its subs to try to mine forward enemy ports. The computer also needs to escort Mine sweepers. In every game I've played I've sunk all of the enemy's MSW's in the first two months of the war.
In the three complete games I've played as allied it always ends the same way with a turkey shoot starting in Nov/Dec 42 where allied air kills wave after wave of first AP's AG's then CL's and DD's. The computer needs to better mix of TF's and use it's Carriers to escort transports and LRCAP to try to protect transports. Have the computer create TF's with a single AP's instead of a group of 4 AP's. Single ship TF's are harder to spot, attack, and reduce the chance of air attacks finding and attacking single ship TF's. Multiple singe ship TF's will reduces enemy air power, and cause higher fatigue due to higher number of air missions.
3. Carrier Ops
The computer seems to keep all of its carriers in one super group this works well for invasion groups, but later when the computer is trying to hang on, it should use it's carriers to escort re-supply missions to forward bases.
4. Damaged Ships
It seems the computer tries to return damaged ships directly to Truk, but most never make it. I have saved very badly damaged ships by first getting them docked at the nearest port until fires and flooding are under control, the computer/AI should try to do the same.
5. Troop Transport
The game really needs the ability to load just troops, trying to keep troops together (replacements) and rotating troops is important in the long campaigns and is all but impossible even for the human player due to this limitation. I have not no idea if the computer/AI does even tries to rotate troops.
