Only by getting most of their forces defeated to far forward and not concentrating did the allies make it easy for japan.

Been reading Pheonix from the flames the story of the rebuilding of the Indian Army and its pretty clear from that individual Bns fought well in 42 it was simply they were put in impossible positions by high command

Wavell was out of touch and didnt understand the realities of the situation of his forces
Hutton had to much on his plate as defact military governor and trying to play Corps and Army commander
Smythe was old and being ignored by his superiors

Basically it was poor command and control, a grave misunderstanding of the forces available and mistakes as to where to defend that caused the defeat before all the forces were released from malaya (Burma IMO would have still fallen absent 18th Brit and 1 of the Aussie Divs going to that theatre)

An interesting what if would have been if 18th Brit, 44th and 45th Indian Bdes and 6th/7th Aus Divs were sent to Burma - would Burma have fallen ??

I dont know it would certainly have derailed the Japanese offensives elsewhere without materially shortening the loss of Singapore

Its a good area for what ifs.

If these extra troops could have arrived in time to defend a Salween R/Sittang R defence line, with the Chinese on their left flank......
There would need to be a strong RAF commitment, but squadrons were arriving and being sent to Java etc

Supply into Rangoon would be via a dangerous route into Rangoon/Bassein unless a major effort was invested into building an LOC from around Gwa. This would be through the Arakan Yomas which has no roads and with mountains in the 1500-1800 ft range. I think supply of 6+ Div equivs in this theatre in 1942 would be the problem.

What would be the Aussie payoff?
9th Div returned home as well?

About 17 days into the Burma Campaign as the Allies. The smaller scenario is helping me to get a better grasp of land warfare in WITP.

Thanks.

Hi Andy,

Playing as Allies, my strategy was to defend Moulmein and Sittang Bridge.

My southern units just made it to Moulmein before the IJA, here I had 1st Burma Bde and 11th Burma Rifles. the Burrifs held for 3 days against 2 Inf Divs and 2 Inf Rgts.

By the time they fell back I had 2 Inf Bdes and 2-3 Inf Bns at Sittang Bridge.

IJA shock attacks failed and IMHO took too much strength out of them. there was a 1-2 attack but next turn the Gurkha Bde arrived and that was the end.

Earlier 55th Recce Rgt was spotted at Chiang Mai, I bombed it a bit with Audax's but it dissapeared, suprisingly a bit later it arrived just out of Tuongoo which was defended by 2 Indian Bns. Oddly it didnt attack (I dont think it would have done much) and I scraped uo a Chinese horde or 2 and a Burma Bde to kicj it back into Siam.

AI didnt do anything odd, just isnt a lot of other attack routes unless you send the IJA via Ciang Mai and the northern route.

Good short game!

ps problem is 2 divs v 2 divs if the allies play it properly its actually a tough fight for the Japanese

Only because Hutton and Wavell tried to fight to far forward and piecemel was it the rout it was maybe t being a tough nut for the japanese is as it should be....

Okay. I need some assistance here. I am logged in, but I cannot find the actual download link for this scenario anywhere in this thread.

Can someone point it out for me?

Thanks,
